Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine Southport

This post is for a locum consultant in Intensive Care. This is a whole-time 6 month Fixed Term post (with the option to extend to 12 months) offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated doctor to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary critical care medicine in a multi award winning Critical Care Unit. Southport Hospital is part of the Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

The trust currently delivers a consultant-led ward round by a critical care specialist 7-days a week. The logistical challenges of having acute clinical services across two sites means the on-call consultant cover out-of-hours is currently provided jointly by the anaesthetic and critical care departments. The trust is currently developing a workforce strategy, with the aim of working towards separate critical care and anaesthetic consultant on-call rotas. The successful candidates would be expected to cover the on call for the critical care unit only.

Applicants are required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register. Due to current service demands and the short term nature of this post, we are only able to consider applicants who have relevant UK experience.

Main duties of the job

• The appointee is expected to be involved in the department's undergraduate, postgraduate and Nurse Specialist teaching and other appropriate educational activities.
• The appointee will be actively involved as a Clinical Supervisor but will not be directly responsible for educational supervision at least initially (this is to be reviewed at job planning).
• The appointee will have a responsibility for the running of their clinical service, integrating this with the department as a whole and ensuring appropriate communication with general practitioners, managers, and hospital committees.
• The appointee will be responsible for contributing to the achievement of relevant aspects of the Trust's contractual obligations and business plans.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Essential: Full registration with General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise, MB ChB or equivalent, FFICM or equivalent, Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for ICM or within six months of receiving single or dual CCT in ICM at the time of interview or Established and Current Substantive Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine.
• Desirable: MD/MSc or equivalent.

Knowledge

• Essential: Minimum of 6 months recent experience of working in intensive care Medicine within the NHS, Ability to stabilise and provide initial management of the critically ill patient at a senior level, Demonstrable competence in Critical Care procedures, Current ALS Provider.
• Desirable: Ultrasound accreditation relevant to Critical Care, Bed side ECHO accreditation, Simulation experience.

Management/Audit/Leadership

• Essential: Understanding of the management and leadership responsibilities of a consultant within the NHS, Evidence of active and consistent engagement with clinical audit and/or QIP(s).
• Desirable: Good IT and computing skills, Successful completion of appropriate management/leadership course(s), Previous participation in a management/leadership role.

Teaching

• Essential: Recognition by the GMC as a Clinical Supervisor, Evidence of delivering teaching to undergraduate students, postgraduate doctors and/or allied healthcare professionals.
• Desirable: Recognition by the GMC as an Educational Supervisor, Formal training/qualification in Teaching and/or Learning.

Research/Publications

• Desirable: Evidence of recent and current research, with relevant publications, Formal training in Research Methodology.

Personal Attributes
