North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of the newest acute hospital trusts in England, formed on 1 April 2017. The Trust runs Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Stamford & Rutland Hospital. Together they serve approximately 700,000 residents. The Department of Anaesthesia has 45 Consultants and the work undertaken includes all surgical specialities (except cardio-thoracic/neurosurgery). The total workload is 22,000 operations per annum. There are 2500 emergency cases and 5500 obstetric deliveries. There are both acute and chronic pain services within the department. The hospital has a 16 bedded Critical Care Unit, providing a mix of level 2 and 3 beds. The On Call Anaesthesia Consultant is resident every day between 0800 and 2300 and the On Call Critical Care Consultant is resident between 0800 and 2200hrs.

This post is open to Anaesthesia trainees who hold the Royal College of Anaesthetists' (RCOA) Basic Level Training Certificate (or equivalent). Applicants also need to be competent in Critical Care and have passed the IACOA.

The post holder will work flexibly, deputising in theatre for Consultant absence and providing on-call cover for Obstetrics and ICU at equivalent to ST4-8 or Registrar grade. There may be the opportunity to continue or develop a sub-speciality. The department supports FRCA exams and actively encourages participation in audit, research, and educational activities. The department is actively encouraging and supporting CT3 and ST4 competencies for the curriculum change. We also have a newly set up CESR pathway. Applicants should have full GMC registration and should have completed at least two years of training and service in hospitals recognised by RCOA. Overseas applicants should demonstrate comparable experience. The primary FRCA is desirable and experience in Obstetric anaesthesia and Critical Care is essential.

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is a large, complex organisation serving a diverse population across multiple sites. We are committed to delivering high quality, safe and effective care, with a strong focus on continuous improvement and clinical leadership. You will be joining a supportive and collaborative senior leadership community, working closely with clinical and corporate colleagues to address key priorities and challenges. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a rapid, visible difference at a critical time, improving care, strengthening standards, and embedding a positive, accountable culture.

The post holder will participate in a 1 in 8 full shift rota covering Critical Care or Obstetric Anaesthesia. The successful candidates will be working 7 nights, 7 long days (08:00-20:30) in an 8 week period and 7 twilight shifts over a 16 week period. The remainder of shifts are 08:00-17.30. The rota is fully compliant with the European Working Time Directive including internal cover. Any sub-specialist interest in Anaesthesia would be encouraged, and we would endeavour to incorporate it into the working program. In addition, we have an active educational program and would support and encourage the acquisition of the FRCA Primary or Final, if required.

The Anaesthetic Department provides services at Peterborough City and Stamford Hospitals (chronic pain management), with some consultants doing ad hoc lists at Hinchingbrooke. The work undertaken by the Department includes all the surgical specialities with the exception of cardio-thoracic, major vascular and neurosurgery. Peterborough Maternity Unit within the Hospital has more than 5500 deliveries a year. The epidural rate is approximately 25% of the normal deliveries, and 98% of elective caesarean sections are performed under regional anaesthesia. All ten weekly sessions are Consultant covered and Consultants participate in the teaching and supervision of anaesthetic juniors, the collection of data for audit and in the anaesthetic assessment of complex or obese patients. The Obstetric Anaesthetic cohort of consultants maintains close links with other maternity units in the Eastern Region via the East Anglian Obstetric Anaesthesia Group (EAOAG).
