Job summary

University Hospitals of Liverpool Group wishes to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist.

The successful candidate will join 20 Consultant colleagues in providing general and sub‑specialty Gastroenterology and Hepatology services across the Trust, supporting the local community and other referring hospitals across the region.

The Care Group spans the full range of inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services. It is supported clinically by 3 Nurse Consultants, 35 Specialist Nurses, 6 StRs, a Hepatology NTN, 1 Lecturer and 5 F1/F2 doctors. This is a 10 PA role.

The Trust provides general acute healthcare services to residents of Liverpool, North Merseyside and the surrounding areas. It also provides tertiary care for digestive diseases across Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, the Isle of Man and beyond.

The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Liverpool Hospital site and will be a member of the Gastroenterology Department.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post will be to provide and help further develop the Hepatology service along with the other WTE Hepatology Consultants already in post that will meet the future demands for Hepatology Services in a level 2 hepatology service.

We currently have 7 state of the art endoscopy rooms within the unit on the Royal site. In addition we have a satellite diagnostic endoscopy unit at Broadgreen Hospital delivering colonoscopy and TNG. The endoscopy department is staffed and commissioned to deliver 104 session per week. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the delivery of endoscopy lists for both specialist endoscopy and diagnostic endoscopy to help the trust meet its diagnostic targets.

Job responsibilities

The Appointee, together with his or her colleagues will have a commitment to the provision of Hepatology services to the Royal Liverpool site within the University Hospitals Liverpool Group. The majority of work will be General Hepatology alongside some subspeciality interest.

The Job Plan

In patient ward cover is provided on a rotational basis supporting the management of the Hepatology in‑patients when the Consultants take part in hot weeks for 2 weeks at a time. The majority (>90%) of our ward patients have primary GI disorders. The successful candidate will also cover Endoscopy and Out‑patient sessions.

The expectation is to provide an on call commitment to support endoscopy and out of hours cover (on call sessions are recognised within our job plans in addition to the on call supplement).

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB, ChB
  • Full registration with GMC
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Specialist Register for Gastroenterology with GMC

Desirable

  • Higher Degree (PhD, MD)
  • Fellow of Royal College

Experience

Essential

  • Eligible to be on specialist register in General Medicine
  • Eligible to be on specialist register in Gastroenterology
  • Wide Experience in Clinical Hepatology
  • Evidence of continuing medical education

  • Competent JAG certified colonoscopist
  • Endoscopy trainer certification by JAG standards
