Consultant Cellular Pathologist Leicester

This is a replacement post within the Department of Cellular & Genomic Pathology in the Clinical Support and Imaging Clinical Management Group (CMG). The post is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The appointment will be whole time (10 PA) and it is anticipated that the appointed person will support the Breast and Urology teams along with other specialities, subject to service requirement and discussion and agreement, along with PAs allocated for education. Any consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work whole time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. Main duties of the job:

• Applications are invited for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist to join our committed and enthusiastic team in supporting the Cellular & Genomic Pathology department in Leicester.
• The position will be primarily based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site, but with the possibility of travel to the Glenfield Hospital or Leicester General Hospital for some duties.
• You are expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (including supervision, training, assessment and appraisal of specialist registrars and biomedical scientists), clinical audit, research and development.
• You will work within a multidisciplinary team and may also be required to undertake management duties.

Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists and full GMC registration with a licence to practice is a requirement of the role.

Job responsibilities:

• Laboratory work (to include cutup, reporting, frozen section cover) both personally and in supervision of trainees.
• Clinical administration.
• Clinical meetings including multidisciplinary and other meetings.
• Research, CPD, Audit and Clinical Governance, mandatory training, appraisal and job planning, administration, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

TOTAL PROGRAMMED ACTIVITIES: 10 PAs. On average, pathologists attend one MDT per week and it is possible other specialty MDTs will require attendance in the same week. Prep time and time spent attending MDTs is included in DCC activities in the job plan. The job plan will be reviewed and a performance review carried out by the Head of service and, through them, the Medical Director of the Trust.

UHL recognises that all consultants require time to maintain and develop professional expertise but that additional supporting activities such as educational supervision, teaching and management may not be evenly distributed within a department.

Person Specification:

Qualifications / Training

• Essential: MB BS or Equivalent, Full GMC Registration, Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).
• Desirable: Membership of relevant Professional Specialist Societies or Associations, Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent, Peer-reviewed publications, Relevant managerial qualifications and experience, Molecular modules, Certificate or Masters in Genomics, Dermatopathology Diploma.

Experience / Clinical Skills

• Essential: Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in cellular pathology, Urological pathology and Dermatopathology, Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision, Broad range of IT skills, Knowledge of evidence-based practice.
• Desirable: Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a specialty interest in Urological pathology and Dermatopathology, Molecular modules, Certificate or Masters completed, Higher Education degrees.

Management

• Essential: Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors, Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles, Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload, Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS, Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills), Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues.
• Desirable: Evidence of management and administration experience, Management training on an accredited course, Awareness of Service Development issues.
