Job Summary

A vacancy has arisen for an experienced and motivated Genetic Counsellor to join our Principal Genetic Counsellor team. This is a full-time position (part time will be considered) for a Registered Genetic Counsellor. The post-holder will be expected to provide an expert genetic counselling service in line with the job description and personal specification. This will include taking the lead role for one or more areas of genetic counselling, likely in rare genetic disease, prenatal, inherited cardiac conditions, and/or neurogenetics, to meet the needs of the service and applicant’s expertise/interests.

LCGS is based at Joseph's Well, close to the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) site in central Leeds, with easy public transport links. Although the majority of Genetic Counselling clinics are run virtually, some face-to-face clinics are held in the nearby LGI, and it is possible that additional face-to-face clinics will be re-established in district hospitals in the future – if so some occasional travel may be required.

Why you should join our Team

LCGS, which is part of the North East & Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service (NEY GMS), provides Clinical Genetics services to a diverse population of 4.2 million across a large, varied geographical area. The service comprises an experienced team of Consultant Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors and Genetic Research Nurses/Practitioners, as well as resident doctors and trainee Genetic Counsellors, supported by a large clinical administrative team. There is wide scope for personal and professional development and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to CPD for all staff. The post-holder will also help to promote and prioritise Genetic Counsellor continuing professional development.

The ethos of the department is innovative and forward-thinking and there will be many opportunities for the post holder to support service development and transformation projects locally and regionally. Yorkshire is a wonderful county to live in; there really is something for everyone. From the metropolitan city of Leeds it is easy to reach the stunning natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and Coast.

What you will bring to the role

As an experienced Registered Genetic Counsellor, you will have specialist expertise in one or more clinical areas, allowing you to take a lead in this speciality, including identifying and facilitating service development strategies to enhance patient care. As the role includes line management, you will have prior experience of mentoring and coaching in a previous line management role and/or through the supervision of trainee/student Genetic Counsellors.
