Are you an experienced Dietitian with a passion for leadership, service development and managing high-performing teams? We are seeking a Clinical Dietetic Manager to provide operational leadership, while contributing to the leadership and strategic development of the wider Adult Nutrition and Dietetic Service. Our large friendly department consists of 4 adult teams and 1 children’s team which include many regional specialist services. Our department employs Dietetic Assistants, Dietetic Associate Practitioners, Apprentice Dietitians, Dietitians, and Enteral Feeding Nurse Specialists.

Working closely with clinical leads, multidisciplinary teams and senior leaders, you will play a key role in shaping future services, supporting staff development and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

This is a rare opportunity to lead and influence services across several teams including Speciality & Integrated Medicine, Diabetes, Respiratory, Cystic Fibrosis, Critical Care and Intestinal Failure supporting approximately 25 wte staff. Whilst predominantly based at St James’s Hospital, some teams also work at Leeds General Infirmary therefore leadership across both sites is required.

The SIM Dietetic team provides inpatient dietetic care in the specialities of general and acute medicine, respiratory medicine, infectious diseases and care of the older adult. The Cystic Fibrosis unit is a 12 bedded inpatient ward with a strong, supportive ward-based multidisciplinary team, which has expanded rapidly over recent years with almost 400 patients attending our services. The diabetes team provides care for patients predominately with type 1 diabetes and includes sub speciality areas of young adults, pumps and technology, a large antenatal service both gestational and pre-existing diabetes, DAFNE and an inpatient service. The critical care team manage a varied and complex inpatient caseload across all our Critical Care Units, including Cardiac, Neurosurgical, Major Trauma, Surgical and General ICUs with a supportive MDT. The Intestinal Failure team manages a large caseload of patients with types 1, 2 and 3 Intestinal failure. They provide a service to over 200 patients within the Yorkshire and Humber region who require parenteral nutrition at home, as well as managing inpatients within LTHT, including patients located in the Centre for Intestinal Rehabilitation at Leeds.

As a Clinical Dietetic Manager, you will work alongside experienced clinical leads and multidisciplinary teams to ensure services remain responsive, sustainable and patient-centred. You will have the opportunity to lead change, support staff development, contribute to organisational priorities and influence service delivery across the wider Adult Nutrition and Dietetic Service. The role is ideally suited to an experienced Dietitian leader who is motivated by developing people, improving services and making a lasting impact on patient care through effective leadership.

The post holder will provide management, leadership and support to a team of staff leading on strategic operational policy and pathways within specialist areas for the Trust for the wider Adult Nutrition and Dietetic Service. The role will mainly focus on service leadership rather than direct clinical delivery but may have some element dependent on skills and will include responsibility for workforce planning, service development, quality improvement, governance, performance management and supporting the delivery of strategic objectives.

The post holder will work collaboratively with pathway leads and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective and sustainable services, while supporting staff development, recruitment, retention and succession planning.

Applicants should have experience of working at a senior level in Dietetics together with significant leadership and management experience; able to work within and manage a team, demonstrate time management skills and initiative. Having an awareness of current issues in Nutrition and Dietetics, you will have evidence of critical appraisal skills, implementation of evidence based practice and demonstrated knowledge of research and audit as well as clinical governance and risk assessment.

The role will focus on strategic and operational leadership, including workforce planning, service improvement, quality and governance, recruitment and retention, financial management and delivery of service objectives. The successful candidate will work closely with pathway clinical leads and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective and sustainable services and will contribute to wider departmental and organisational priorities.

Applicants should demonstrate experience of working at a senior level within clinical dietetic pathways together with significant leadership and management experience.

Overview of organisation/department

The post holder will join the adult nutrition and dietetic department comprising of approximately 75 wte staff working across a wide range of acute and specialist pathways, many of which are regional. We are aiming to develop our research portfolio further and support everyone to progress with their career ambitions across the 4 pillars of practice. We are proud of staff feedback which reflected the support provided by their colleagues was the main reason people work and stay within the department. The Nutrition and Dietetic Department provides regular professional development events, and hosts training to A, B and C placement students. You will be actively involved in the development, implementation and audit of patient care practices as part of Clinical Governance. This is an exciting time to join the service. Recent leadership developments have brought Nutrition & Dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy together under a shared Deputy Head of Therapies, creating new opportunities for collaborative working, innovation and service transformation.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across both professions, contributing to service-wide developments and helping shape the future direction of therapies across the Trust. We are also pleased to be welcoming a new post into LTHT, a Chief AHP, who will help shape the future of AHP services within our Trust and the local health economy aligned to the NHS 10-year plan.
