We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced QIS Neonatal Nurse to join our Level 2 Neonatal Unit as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.

In this role, you will provide high‑quality, family‑centred care to premature and sick newborn infants, lead shifts, support and develop junior staff, and contribute to quality improvement, governance, and service development.

Essential requirements

Registered Nurse with NMC registration, Neonatal QIS qualification, significant neonatal nursing experience, excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a skilled member of a nursing team.
  • To assist in the provision of high standards of holistic family‑centred care to neonates and their families.
  • To assist in the creation of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for neonates and their families.
  • To undertake management of Unit under supervision of senior staff.
  • To work in partnership with the medical staff and multidisciplinary team.
  • To provide and develop evidence‑based care within the Unit.

  • Job responsibilities
  • Recording the patient’s response to nursing care planned and implemented.
  • Evaluating the effect of the nursing care planned delivery.
  • Reporting any untoward incidents and investigating the cause, ensuring a safe environment for the neonate to facilitate optimal outcomes.
  • Assisting senior staff to enable effective patient care by other qualified members of the ward team.
  • Regularly taking charge of the unit.
  • Participating in orientation programmes for newly qualified nurses, nursery nurses and healthcare assistants.
  • Participating in the development of newly qualified nurses, nursery nurses and healthcare assistants.
  • Assisting in overall ward management and determining nursing priorities.
  • Developing and fostering a team‑working atmosphere.
  • Participating in the clinical education of student nurses.
  • Using personal teaching and assessing skills and acting as clinical supervisor, supervising student nurses’ nursing techniques.
  • Identifying teaching/learning opportunities and planning clinical teaching for nursing staff and student nurses.
  • Identifying relevant research findings to support clinical practice.
  • Organising and participating in planned teaching programmes for the ward with senior staff.
  • Being an assessor of student nurses, midwives, and ENB 405 students.
  • Using counselling skills for the benefit of staff, parents and carers.
  • Participating in the clinical governance cycle and Trust risk management procedures.
  • Ensuring effective and efficient supply and use of support services and resources.
  • Maintaining and rotating supplies at the agreed stock levels.
  • Participating in the development and testing of new equipment, materials and procedures for patient care.
  • Maintaining safe custody and use of drugs.
  • Reporting equipment and furnishings requiring repair or replacement.
  • Reporting health and safety risks to the Clinical Manager.
  • Reporting deficiencies in support services to the Clinical Manager.
  • Contacting appropriate nurses, midwives and healthcare disciplines and providing written reports on request.
  • Preparing written summaries of nursing care and liaising with the Primary Health Care Team on discharge or transfer home.
  • Observing confidentiality of patient information in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary audit.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN/RN Child/RM
  • Neonatal Qualified In speciality qualification (ENB 405 or equivalent)
  • Mentorship in practice (ENB 998 / MIPS)
  • NLS trained

Desirable

  • Child Protection Training
  • Effective managerial / leadership skills

Experience

Essential

  • Experience at Band 5 within neonatal setting
  • Experience and ability to participate within emergency situations in a neonatal unit and deliveries
  • Excellent neonatal clinical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, effective teaching, training and preceptorship skills

Desirable

  • Basic knowledge of computers & SEND database; participate in divisional risk management and clinical governance framework
  • Sound working experience of child protection issues
  • Disclosure and Barring Service Check
