An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the senior nursing team within the Emergency Department at Weston General Hospital.

Our Emergency Department provides care to a diverse patient population and is a fast-paced, dynamic environment where strong clinical leadership, effective decision-making and excellent teamwork are essential.

Working closely with the ED Matron, senior nursing team and Emergency Medicine Consultants, the Sister/Charge Nurse will play a key role in delivering safe, effective and high-quality patient-centred care.

You will provide visible leadership to the nursing workforce, maintaining oversight of the department and supporting the team to deliver safe and efficient care throughout the patient journey.

We are looking for an experienced Emergency Department nurse with strong leadership qualities, excellent assessment and clinical decision-making skills, and the ability to remain calm and solution-focused in a busy environment.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensuring safety checks are completed
  • Maintaining standards through audits
  • Ensuring safe staffing of the emergency department
  • Clinically assessing to help identify sick and deteriorating patients
  • ensuring sepsis targets are met
  • Providing clinical support to staff on duty
  • Maintaining oversight of all areas of the emergency department
  • Ensure clear communication within the department and externally with patient flow
  • Support with clinical emergencies
  • Ensure patients have plans and facilitate flow

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced clinical knowledge and understanding of current evidence-based practice within urgent and emergency care
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in sensitive, challenging or conflict situations
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, safeguarding, risk management and professional accountability
  • Ability to use audit, incident data, patient/staff feedback and performance information to identify and support improvements in care
  • Understanding of people-management responsibilities including appraisal, performance, attendance, wellbeing and staff development
  • Ability to support quality improvement and implement changes to clinical practice and service delivery
  • Competent in the use of relevant clinical and digital information systems

Experience

  • Significant post-registration experience within urgent and emergency care, demonstrating the breadth and depth of experience required to undertake a senior ED nursing leadership role
  • Significant experience of clinical leadership and coordinating care within a busy acute or emergency clinical environment
  • Experience of managing complex clinical situations and supporting the care of deteriorating and critically unwell patients
  • Experience of leading, supervising and developing nursing staff and/or multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience of managing staffing and operational pressures, including prioritising resources according to clinical need and patient safety
  • Experience of contributing to clinical governance, audit, incident review, quality improvement or service development
  • Experience of supporting staff development through supervision, coaching, teaching, appraisal or other developmental activity

Desirable

  • Experience of contributing to research, evaluation or evidence-based practice development
  • Experience of leading or implementing significant service improvement or change within urgent and emergency care
  • Experience of formal people-management processes such as recruitment, attendance management, performance management or capability processes

Qualifications and Training

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Degree in Nursing or relevant health-related subject, or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development appropriate to emergency nursing and clinical leadership
  • Post-registration qualification relevant to urgent and emergency care
  • Teaching, assessing, coaching or practice education qualification
  • Evidence of postgraduate/Master's level study or willingness to undertake relevant postgraduate development

Desirable

  • Leadership or management qualification, or evidence of formal leadership development
  • Non-Medical Prescribing qualification
