Registered Nurse, Preoperative Assessment Coventry and Rugby

By now you'll know we are one of the largest acute Trusts in the country specialising in major trauma, cardiothoracics and neurosciences. Working within our nurse led Pre-Operative Assessment Service (POAS), we will enable you to develop valuable clinical skills to include: collating histories, assessments, clinical decision making, recording ECG's and phlebotomy. There are also opportunities to undertake link nurse roles and participate in service development projects and away days. You might already be experienced in preoperative assessment or have previous surgical or acute experience; however, you will receive a supernumerary period and be supported by in-house training and a competency document. Main duties of the job

Our service is responsible for assessing, screening and preparing all adult elective surgical patients prior to surgery. We help to reduce complications, lengths of stay, and long-term morbidity and mortality by:

• Risk assessment and stratification
• Optimisation of comorbidities and lifestyle to reduce risk
• Shared, informed decision-making
• Triaging patients to receive the appropriate resources to support their recovery
• Pre-anaesthesia screening

This is an autonomous role in a busy, innovative, nurse-led department which operates 7 days a week and offers opportunities to rotate across both of our sites: University Hospital Coventry and The Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. Only applicants Post-Preceptorship will be considered. Previous applicants need not apply. Please note this post is not suitable for applicants who are required to undertake the OSCE training programme. Applicants who do not have current valid UK NMC registration will not be considered for this post. Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Job responsibilities

• Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Essential: Current Professional Registration, Evidence of continuous professional development, Study at level 6 (Degree/Diploma), Post-Preceptorship
• Desirable: Relevant qualification according to speciality, Teaching and assessing qualification

Experience

• Essential: Post Registration professional clinical experience in pre-operative assessment and/or relevant specialty, Post-Preceptorship experience
• Desirable: Ability to successfully manage people and change

Knowledge

• Essential: Knowledge of the Professional Code of Conduct, Able to apply evidence to practice, Awareness of clinical governance & a commitment to clinical supervision and staff
• Desirable: An understanding of current issues relating to the NHS

Skills

• Essential: Patient focused, Good communication skills, IT skills, Able to prioritise and meet deadlines, Good management of own and others time
