Job summary

This is an opportunity to join the dynamic and enthusiastic team of reconstructive surgeons to gain experience in a skin and breast oncology. In addition to activity in Oxford, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide plastic surgery support within our spoke service based at the Great Western Hospital. There is excellent collaborative working relationships with our Dermatology and Breast teams in Oxford and Swindon and there will be support and mentoring for new consultants when they join the department.

Main duties of the job

The post-holders' duties will be primarily at The John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals in Oxford, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations and its partner hospitals. Flexible working is essential, and the job plans are annualised to reflect this.

Clinical Duties

The post-holder will have responsibility for general plastic surgery services at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. There will be an on-call commitment (presently 1 in 14).

The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery provides a comprehensive reconstructive surgery service to Oxford and its surrounding areas. We have a consultant-based service. Services provided by existing consultants in the department include plastics trauma surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, upper limb, bone infection, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, autologous transplantation, head and neck cancer in addition to hypospadias. We have Burn Facility status as part of the London and South East Burn Network. We are fortunate to have our offices, outpatient clinics, theatres, adult and children's wards and day case units co-located in a new block on the John Radcliffe site. The Head & Neck Unit is in the Cancer Centre at the nearby Churchill Hospital.

The Department has a substantial presence at the nearby Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital, where the plastic surgery service has a hand surgery workload, and provides reconstructive support to the Bone Infection Unit and Sarcoma services.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. The department is actively involved with Oxford University providing research opportunities.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process. The Trust will offer a mentor in the form of an established consultant colleague to the appointee to help them settle into work as easily as possible.

Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair. Clinical, administrative and secretarial support will be provided to the appointee.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise
  • Basic medical qualifications
  • FRCS Plast or its equivalent
  • To have completed a minimum of 6 years training in Plastic Surgery
  • To have a Certificate of Completion of Training

Desirable

  • Higher medical degree
  • Further training a Fellowship level in microsurgical breast reconstruction in the United Kingdom and internationally

Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in general plastic surgery
  • Competence in all aspects of microsurgical reconstruction.
  • Competence in all aspects of Plastic Surgery including lower and upper limb trauma in addition to skin oncology
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.

Desirable

  • Experience of working at consultant level in a major trauma centre
  • Leadership at consultant level of the management of breast reconstruction, skin oncology and complex trauma in a major trauma centre

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
  • Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
  • Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
