Job summary

University Hospitals of Liverpool Group is seeking to appoint a Consultant Cardiologist (full-time, 10 PA) with a defined subspecialty interest in one of the following areas: Heart Failure and Cardiac Devices (including pacing); Echocardiography and non-invasive ultrasound imaging (including stress echocardiography); or cardiovascular cross-sectional imaging (Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI). Applicants should clearly indicate their subspecialty interest in their application.

Main duties of the job

The appointee, together with their colleagues at the Aintree site, will have a commitment to the provision of cardiology services. The appointee is responsible for the continued development and expansion of their subspecialty interest and will be expected to work closely with the rest of the Consultants.

The successful candidate will undertake two sessions dedicated to their subspecialty interest. Depending on the area of interest, this may include contributing to or leading the Heart Failure and Devices service, the Echocardiography / Valve service, or the Cardiac CT / MRI service, and sharing the relevant multidisciplinary team meeting (for example the Heart Failure MDT, the Infective Endocarditis / Valve MDT, or the Imaging MDT).

In addition, other duties will include administration, attendance at meetings and continuing professional development. It is expected that the appointee will participate in the on-call rota for Cardiology.

The job plan is annualised and is based on a 10 PA job plan with 2 supporting PAs.

Job responsibilities

In-patient services are provided between a 14-bed ACCU and a 36-bed Cardiology ward (ward 8). The Acute Cardiac Care Unit has a monitoring system. The Unit is run by the Consultant Cardiologists (1 in 9 rota, total of 6 weeks per year) who provide twice daily ward rounds with junior medical staff support.

Ward eight is covered on a week rotational basis by 1 Consultant. Each day on the ward, there will be an expectation of a 'board round' and physical review of new admissions and a shared list with a middle grade doctor and junior medical staff.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: o CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months) o CESR, or o European Community Rights
  • Signed off / accredited for declared subspecialty interest

Desirable

  • Higher research degree, or in the process of obtaining a higher research degree

Experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in elective and emergency Cardiology in the UK up to the standard expected of CCT
  • Evidence of practice at consultant, sub-consultant or senior SpR level for a reasonable period of time

Desirable

  • Previous Fellowships or extended training

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Expertise in a declared subspecialty field, in one of the following areas: o Heart Failure and Cardiac Devices, including pacing o Echocardiography (with TOE and/or Stress Echo accreditation) o Cardiovascular cross-sectional imaging (Cardiac CT and/or Cardiac MRI accreditation)
