Job summary

Applications are invited to the post of a Breast Trust Grade Registrar (6 months) based at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This post is intended for someone who has completed basic surgical training with attainment of MRCS.

This post is an ideal opportunity for the successful candidate to gain more experience within the speciality of Breast to improve their competitiveness at National Selection for higher training.

The post will involve supporting one-stop (triple assessment) urgent suspected cancer clinics, assisting in theatre lists, and attending MDT meetings and presenting, as necessary.

The department of Surgery at Ashford and St Peter's is a friendly and dynamic one. Working as a member of the team the successful candidate will provide a high-quality service that aims to deliver excellent patient care.

There is also a requirement to work the General Surgery on-call rota at St Peters Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • To conduct daily ward rounds with the medical team, review patients and formulate appropriate clinical plans.
  • To be part of the seven day working model adopted by the Trust.
  • To be part of the emergency on call rota
  • To ensure continuity of a high standard of care, assessing the health needs of the patients and taking appropriate actions including:
  • Ordering of diagnostic tests.
  • Making and receiving referrals.
  • Discharging patients within agreed protocols.
  • To provide advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis through to treatment.
  • To accept responsibility for own caseload, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care recorded, which reflects the assessments undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made, ensuring clear documentation in the patient's records.
  • To be actively involved in in-patient care, liaising with ward staff and other members of the clinical team as appropriate.
  • To assess patients in the surgical pre-assessment clinic and arrange appropriate investigations including radiological imaging.
  • To review patients for discharge and prepare appropriate documentation of their in-patient stay for the information of their family practitioner.
  • To carry out procedures which will include:
  • Venepuncture
  • Intravenous cannulation
  • Blood gas sampling and analysis
  • ECG
  • To work with the supervising surgeon('s) to ensure appropriate medications are prescribed to patient

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • be expected to participate in the middle grade 1:10 24 hour non-resident on-call. This may be subject to change to adapt to the needs of the service.
  • always be supported by a consultant on-call who will undertake daily ward rounds and support the junior team in managing inpatients.
  • be expected to work flexibly to support the service. This will include regular Breast theatre lists and clinics.
  • form part of the Breast MDT and will be expected to prepare and present cases at the weekly meeting which will be used as an educational and development opportunity.
  • be expected to work with other speciality teams across both Ashford and St. Peters Hospitals to provide an efficient and effective service for inpatients, day-case and outpatient care.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council.
  • MBBS or equivalent MRCS

Desirable

  • MSc, MD or other higher degree

Clinical Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Previous Breast experience with ability to manage common emergencies like scrotal explorations and stent insertion.

Desirable

  • Have completed a minimum of 6 months experience in Breast Surgery
  • Attendance at relevant courses e.g. ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills or equivalent, CCrlSP
