Staff Nurse - Urology Outpatients Burnley

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 Staff Nurse to join our Urology Outpatients department.

The successful candidate will support clinicians in delivering high- quality patient care, assisting with procedures, and ensuring the smooth running of clinics.

The role will involve a variety of clinical responsibilities and full training will be provided.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team are essential.

We are also seeking a candidate with a flexible approach and the ability to respond to the demands of a rapidly changing outpatient department.

You will be working within our specialised urology departments at our 2 main Urology outpatient sites: Royal Blackburn Hospital and Urology Investigations Unit at Burnley General Hospital, you may also be required to support our Urology clinics at Rossendale OPD.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve undertaking nurse led clinics, the coordinating and running of a busy outpatient department in the absence of the outpatient sister or manager.

A variety of clinical skills will be essential including, male and female catheterisation, trial without catheter, bladder instillation's, flow rate clinics and assisting our Clinical Nurse Specialists and Doctors in a variety of other specialised procedures undertaken within the department.

As a registered nurse you will be required to participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members and to work collaboratively and cooperatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families

Job responsibilities

The post holder is expected to

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate, programmes of evidenced-based nursing care. This includes male and female catheterisation, trial without catheter, bladder instillations.
• Assist in the management and organisation of a clinical area.
• Participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members
• Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families
• Work across other sites as need arises

Main Duties

• Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues.

• With the department Sisters, contribute to the development of the service.

• Plan, deliver and evaluate programmes of care, ensuring practice is evidence-based.

• Ensure a cost-effective approach is maintained when ordering medical and surgical supplies.
• Attend at least 1 in 3 departmental meetings and carry out delegated duties.
• Attend Multidisciplinary meetings as required.

• Provide support, guidance and training for newly appointed staff, students, and those undertaking NVQ or post-registration training.
• Assist with implementation of the 6 Cs process as required.
• Adhere to all the NMC professional codes and guidelines and perform professional and clinical duties in accordance with these and the Trusts Policies and procedures.
• Take charge of the department in the absence of the Sister reporting matters of note accordingly.
• Assist in preparing patients for urology procedures and investigations.
• Support clinicians with minor procedures, such as cystoscopies, urodynamics, prostate biopsies.
• Provide reassurance and information to patients and their families.
• Undertake male and female catheterisation and teach intermittent self catheterisation.
• Maintain cleanliness and infection control standards in the clinic.
• Manage stock levels and ensure clinical areas are well-equipped.
• Accurately record patient information and assist with administrative tasks.
• Be responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical areas, including waiting areas, staff areas and stock rooms.
• prepare clinical environments for treatments and investigations
• Support our speciality Urology clinics, including chaperoning
• Competently undertake clinical skills required for the role within their scope of practice and following completing training requirements
• Ensure own actions promote quality and alert others to quality issues.

• adhere to Trust policies and procedures and relevant legislation
• obtain specimens as requested including urine samples, urine for cytology, swabs. undertake urinalysis and blood glucose levels where required
• following completing competencies (if not already completed) to undertake venepuncture and cannulation ensuring ANTT is adhered to

Person Specification

Essential

• Registered Nurse 1st or 2nd level (NMC)
• Able to show evidence of professional development
• Effective communication skills, both written & verbal
• Basic IT skills
• Ability to work flexibly across both sites with the occasional requirement to cover spoke sites

Desirable

• Outpatient or urology experience
• Male and female catheterisation or willingness to undertake training - as this will be essential to role
• Competence in venepuncture /cannulation or willingness to undertake training
• Experience of co-ordinating/taking charge as a staff nurse
