University Hospitals Dorset is looking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Hand and Wrist Surgery. The 12 month fellowship is supervised by Miss Joanna Higgins and Jeremy Southgate.

We are principally recruiting for fellows to commence in September 2026 but will consider applicants for future opportunities if deemed suitable at the point of interview.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be employed in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate, working between Bournemouth Hospital (elective), Wimborne Hospital (elective) and Poole Hospital (trauma). All aspects of elective and traumatic conditions affecting the hand and wrist are covered between the two sites. These include wrist fracture fixation, scaphoid surgery to include non-unions, soft tissue hand trauma, arthroplasty of the small joints of the hand, thumb base and wrist, arthroscopic wrist surgery and nerve decompression. The full range of hand and wrist surgery is covered, with potential to spend time in The Pulvertaft Hand Unit in Derby (up to two weeks every six months) to cover congenital hand, flap reconstruction and flexor tendon surgery. The aim of this fellowship is to offer particular emphasis on the training and quality improvement in hand and wrist surgery, both elective and trauma. There will be weekend working expected in this role.

This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions that you have about this at interview.

There is a planned move for this service anticipated during Winter 2026 when this role and base of work will relocate to Poole Hospital. Upon relocation of the role/service, excess mileage allowance / reimbursement will not apply, and any travel between the postholder's home and work base will be classified as a commute. Any other changes unrelated to this, will be handled in line with Trust/National terms and conditions.
