Job Summary

The department in Blackburn is an integrated Urology service, offering outpatient, ward and office care.

The Urology ward is based in B14 and the outpatient suite includes flexible cystoscopy, transperineal and transrectal ultrasound, prostate biopsies and laser systems including two

Holmium: YAG and one Thulium‑fibre laser machines.

The department also operates two TULA laser machines for flexible cystoscopy and bladder tumour ablation in the outpatient setting.

It is an accredited cancer centre for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network and has three NHS‑commissioned da Vinci robots.

Main Duties

Consultant Urological Surgeon with experience in pelvic oncology, robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) and robotic radical cystectomy.

Proven experience in robotic and open pelvic cancer procedures and interest in robotic, laparoscopic and open kidney cancer/benign procedures.

Experience with paediatric urology at a non‑specialist DGH level is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Perform robotic and open pelvic cancer surgeries
  • Provide core urology services
  • Manage paediatric urological cases
  • Participate in audits, teaching and mentoring
  • Cover a 1:9 on‑call rota with middle grade support
  • Offer inpatient and day‑case surgical care
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR
  • FRCS (UROL) or equivalent
  • MBBS, MRCS or equivalent
  • Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent

Experience

  • High level of demonstrable clinical experience in core and cancer urology work (elective and non‑elective)
  • Proven experience in robotic and open pelvic cancer procedures including RALP and robotic radical cystectomy
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; ability to mentor others
  • Experience of performing audits during training and willingness to undertake departmental audits
  • Experience at consultant level in urology (desirable)
  • Proven experience in reconstructive work (desirable)
  • Research projects or publications (desirable)
  • Continuing Professional Development
  • Clear commitment to lifelong learning
  • Experience of evidence‑based medicine
  • Ability to keep up to date in the speciality
  • Membership of appropriate postgraduate societies (desirable)
  • Management
  • Understanding of NHS management systems including clinical governance and risk management
  • Previous participation in a management role (desirable)
  • Experience in appraisal and mentoring (desirable)
