An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dynamic midwife to lead the Diabetes Midwifery Service at University Hospitals Birmingham. As the Lead Midwife for Diabetes, you will provide expert clinical leadership for women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, person-centred care across the maternity pathway. Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, you will lead service development, drive improvements in clinical outcomes and patient experience, and support the implementation of national and local maternity priorities.
The post holder will act as an expert clinical resource, providing specialist advice, education and support to women, families and healthcare professionals whilst leading and developing a team of specialist midwives. We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking leader with extensive experience in diabetes specialist midwifery practice, a passion for improving outcomes for women and babies, and a commitment to service innovation. Main Duties of the Job:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Diabetes Midwifery Service, ensuring safe, effective and high-quality care for women with diabetes throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period.
- Lead and develop specialist diabetes midwifery services, driving innovation, service improvement and delivery of maternity safety and quality standards.
- Work autonomously as an advanced practitioner, undertaking specialist assessment, care planning, clinical decision-making and ongoing management of complex maternity cases.
- Provide expert advice and support to women, families and multidisciplinary colleagues on the management of diabetes in pregnancy.
- Lead multidisciplinary clinics, meetings, audits and quality improvement initiatives to improve outcomes and patient experience.
- Develop, implement and review clinical guidelines, policies and care pathways in line with national evidence and best practice.
- Lead, support and develop a team of specialist midwives, promoting excellence in clinical practice, education, supervision and professional development.
- Monitor service performance, analyse activity and outcomes data, and contribute to workforce planning, service planning and business development.
- Champion patient safety, safeguarding, clinical governance and continuous quality improvement across the specialist service.
- Act as a visible clinical leader within maternity services, fostering collaborative working and promoting the Trust's values of Kind, Connected and Bold.
