Job summary

The West Midlands GP School is pleased to invite applications for an Associate Dean (GP04) role leading on Educational Development and Leadership as part of an Academy of Learning in the West Midlands. This will be for 2 sessions at GP04 level. This opportunity would be suitable for any established and experienced TPD or AD who has demonstrated a commitment to GP Education and Leadership.

The applicant would need to demonstrate good leadership skills and a commitment to educational development, primarily but not exclusively structured learning. They would help the GP School continue to develop support for doctors as learners and educators regarding early interventions, taking advantage of any neurodiversity, additional exam support, health equity focussed training and other innovations in GP education and training.

They would work alongside the other Associate Deans and Area Directors to upskill the Educational Workforce.

The role involves working strategically with the wider GP School and local programme education teams to support Doctors in GP Training to reach their full potential, progress successfully to MRCGP, and develop as adaptable GPs equipped for the future NHS.

Main duties of the job

As part of the GP School Leadership Team, they should also support other regional and GP developmental priorities and activities, including:

  • Involvement in the Assessment Process
  • Involvement in other duties of the GP Executive Team including investigations, appeals, conferences and development/training days
  • Supporting the other members of the GP Executive Team

The role requires a flexible and responsive approach to working patterns and travel across the West Midlands. Flexibility approach is encouraged.

  • Strategic Leadership on educational development across the GP School, particularly through the Structured Learning Programme, and where appropriate, supporting health inequalities training, neurodiversity initiatives, iTAP, and Trainers' Courses
  • Facilitating awareness and induction for TPDs and Doctors in GP Training, regarding the benefits of SLP and other innovations
  • Working closely with Primary Care School, GP School, Training Hubs, practices and other education providers to ensure high-quality, balanced training placements
  • Organising and delivering face-to-face and virtual educational programmes as necessary for TPDs, Trainers and GP registrars
  • Providing timely educational and pastoral support to learners and educators
  • Ensuring appropriate assessment processes are in place, including effective ARCP processes for SLP
  • Collaborating with senior educators, Training Hubs, Trusts, and partner organisations across the region

Job responsibilities

Core responsibilities include enhancing the training experience for Doctors in GP Training through:

  • Supporting and managing the TPD workforce supporting SLP within the GP Academy
  • Educational facilitation and curriculum support when needed
  • Providing appropriate support to enable the SLP selection and facilitation
  • Help co-ordinate appropriate research and development of innovations for training GPs
  • Support and guidance for GP registrars when necessary

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Primary clinical healthcare qualification
  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty, professional association and/or regulatory body
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development at appropriate level in the Trainer, etc.)
  • ADs require GMC license to practice AND must be in current clinical practice, or within 2 years of ceasing clinical practice

Desirable

  • Educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate diploma or Masters in Medical Education

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrable leadership skills and an ability to influence and motivate others
  • Politically astute with an ability to sensitively manage complexity and uncertainty
  • Ability to problem solve and maintain objectivity
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, written and presentation skills

Desirable

  • Ability to rapidly establish academic credibility

Leadership and Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education
  • Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies

Desirable

  • Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education
  • Understanding of current health, social care and education policy
