Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Burns (ST3+) at the Burns Centre of University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. It is fixed term until 3rd August 2027 only. It is suitable for burns and plastic surgery registrars to have more experience in total burns care.

Main duties of the job:

  • The post holder will work as part of the burns multi-disciplinary team, based at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust with an honorary contract with the Paediatric Burns Centre at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
  • This post will expose the successful candidate to the full breadth of acute and reconstructive burn care including scar and laser treatment.
  • This Trust is the Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Centre for the Midlands Burn Care Network.
  • The University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust is also a specialist centre for Hand Surgery, Breast Reconstruction, Skin Oncology and Head and Neck surgery.
  • The department participates in robust research, audit and quality improvement activities and has a weekly cross-site burns MDT teaching programme which includes renowned national and international speakers.
  • There is an expectation that the successful candidate will participate in research activities and lead teaching and oversee governance activity including local and network audit and morbidity and mortality presentations.

Job responsibilities:

This is a full time position working 40 hours a week. The post holder will become an integral part of the burns MDT Team who work closely with other specialties. This post will include training in total management of acute burns, burns reconstruction and laser therapy mainly for burns scars (fractionated CO2 laser and pulse dye laser) for adults and children.

Qualifications:

  • Essential: Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), with licence to practice. The Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) certificate.
  • Desirable: Medical Laser Certificate, FRCS(Plast) part 1, On the GMC Specialist Registration in Plastic Surgery or within 6 months of CCT/CESR plastic surgery is highly desirable, ATLS and PALS.

Experience:

  • Essential: Experience of at least 6 months at the registrar level in a burns and plastic surgery department in the NHS. Experience of at least 12 months in the NHS. Ability to prioritise workload and use initiative. Experience in burns care. Ability to know own limitations and when to seek advice.
