HGH LED in Acute General Medicine / Gastroenterology Banbury

Applications are invited for a 7-month locally employed doctor post within the department of Acute General Medicine (AGM) and Gastroenterology at the Horton Hospital. This post is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, forward-thinking trainee, who wishes to develop higher level clinical skills in AGM and gastroenterology within an active district general hospital, taking full advantage of the links held with other Oxford teaching hospitals and university institutions. The post will be for 7 months in total depending on a 3-month probationary period to ensure that the job and person are the correct fit. By 3 months, we would expect engagement in a training portfolio process with satisfactory work placed based assessments, as well as supportive feedback from placement supervision groups.

Main duties of the job: The post is aimed at senior medical doctors (those who have completed MRCP) and should appeal to those who not only wish to pursue a career in AGM and/or gastroenterology, but also Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care Medicine. This post is not recognized for postgraduate medical training but will allow competencies to be gained that may count towards eventual CESR accreditation or competency based CCT. The Horton is a District General Hospital in Banbury with an Emergency Dept, admitting a largely unselected medical take. It has a 16-bedded CCU that provides level 2 care for up to 4 patients. This includes non-invasive ventilation, inotropic support and close nursing monitoring. The medical structure for the CCU is a designated ward team looking after these patients under the supervision of rotating respiratory and acute medicine consultants. Gastroenterology at the Horton provide both outpatient and inpatient services. There is no dedicated gastroenterology ward, but we provide a daily consult service. We have a state-of-the-art endoscopy suite with two rooms, which was reaccredited by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal endoscopy (JAG), the gold standard for endoscopy services in the UK, in 2025. The unit offers outpatient and inpatient upper and lower GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and has received outstanding feedback for the quality of training provided. Outpatient clinics include general gastroenterology, as well as hepatology, family cancer, upper GI, and other subspecialist clinics. Services are provided by both Horton resident consultants, and visiting consultants from Oxford. Both patients and trainees have full access to gastroenterology services in Oxford, including tertiary and quaternary level MDTs, specialist services in nutrition, hepatology, IBD, and Upper GI. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to inpatient gastroenterology consults at the Horton under close consultant support. They will also be offered the opportunity to gain experience in upper and lower GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. The successful candidate will also be invited to participate and contribute to the regional gastroenterology registrar teaching programme and the regional medical registrar teaching programme.

• Qualifications
• Essential: Full registration with GMC, Should have completed IMT (or equivalent) and have completed MRCP exams, Must have worked in the NHS for at least 6 months
• Desirable: Critical Care Experience, Ambulatory Care Experience, Gastroenterology experience
• Clinical Skills
• Essential: Recognise the deteriorating patients and manage NIV, Have knowledge of Inotropic support
• Desirable: POCUS trained
• Team Work
• Essential: Evidence of excellence working with nursing and therapy teams
