An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery to join Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will become part of a highly regarded multidisciplinary team, delivering specialist Upper GI and bariatric services within a busy tertiary referral centre while contributing to emergency general surgery, teaching, audit and research activities.

Main duties of the job:

  • Work as a member of the multidisciplinary Upper GI & Bariatric team to provide specialist Upper GI & Bariatric services for outpatients and on the wards.
  • To work flexibly with the 5 Consultants to ensure cover for wards, outpatient clinics and operating lists.
  • Play a full part in the provision of surgical services, potentially including scheduled out of hours work and resident/non-resident on-call duties on a rota basis with colleagues.
  • Be involved in the development and planning of surgical services within the Trust.
  • Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • Participate in audit examining activity, quality and cost of the surgical service.
  • Participate regularly in medical management and audit meetings.
  • Take part in the appraisal processes of the Hospital and its clinical governance activities.

Person Specification:

Qualifications

  • Essential: MBBS or recognized equivalent, MRCS
  • Desirable: FRCS

Experience

  • Essential: Full GMC Registration with licence to practice, A minimum of 2 years full time hospital service in SHO or higher grade on a surgical training program, Able to carry out the duties described in the job.
  • Desirable: Experience at registrar level in general surgery, Teaching of junior medical staff and/or nursing staff.

Additional Criteria

  • Essential: Evidence of participation in audit, Presentation skills, Desire to carry out further research.
  • Desirable: Academic training, Research publications/presentations, Awards/prizes.
