Job Summary

Are you an experienced and compassionate clinician looking to make a lasting difference? We are seeking a dedicated Advanced Arthroplasty Practitioner (Lower Limb) to join our Trauma & Orthopaedics team.

In this rewarding role, you will work at an advanced clinical level, acting as a trusted point of contact for patients with lower limb orthopaedic conditions. You will independently assess, diagnose and manage care within outpatient settings, working closely with orthopaedic consultants and the multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless, high-quality care.

You will guide patients through their treatment journey, from assessment and optimisation for surgery to follow‑up and ongoing management, always placing patient wellbeing, dignity and understanding at the centre of care.

The role offers the opportunity to lead clinics, contribute to service development and support audit, research and innovation. You will also continue your professional development while acting as a role model and source of expertise for colleagues across the team.

The post is based at the Royal Derby Hospital, with occasional travel to community clinics across Derbyshire.

Main Duties of the Job

• Delivering expert clinical care by assessing, diagnosing and managing patients with complex lower limb orthopaedic conditions using advanced clinical judgement and running autonomous outpatient clinics
• Planning and coordinating treatment pathways, preparing patients for surgery, supporting shared decision‑making and, where appropriate, listing patients for procedures.
• Requesting and interpreting investigations, including imaging and blood tests, to guide safe and effective treatment plans.
• Working closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to provide holistic, patient‑centred care while recognising when to seek support or elevate complex cases.
• Providing specialist advice and support to colleagues across the Trust and community, contributing to learning and service improvement.
• Communicating sensitively with patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options and complex information with empathy and clarity.
• Contributing to service development, audit and research to improve patient outcomes and shape future practice.
• Acting as a role model, promoting professionalism, high standards of care and the Trust's CARE values.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• HCPC or NMC registration with a relevant postgraduate MSc qualification (or equivalent Master's level clinical practice evidenced through a CPD portfolio)
• Evidence of competence at ACPA Level 4

Desirable

• Independent Prescribing qualification or relevant experience in reviewing medications (where legally permitted and relevant to practice)

Knowledge

Essential

• Expert knowledge and advanced diagnostic skills in lower limb orthopaedics, including interpretation of plain radiographs, CT, MRI, ultrasound, DEXA, nuclear imaging and relevant blood investigations to support clinical decision‑making and surgical listing
• Substantial experience within a Trauma & Orthopaedic or Musculoskeletal service, including management of patients with lower limb arthroplasty and complex orthopaedic conditions

Skills

Essential

• Ability to work autonomously, including assessment, diagnosis, interpretation of diagnostic investigations, patient selection for surgery, and independent caseload management

Experience

Essential

• Substantial experience within an orthopaedic or musculoskeletal service, with expert knowledge of complex lower limb pathology, diagnostics, evidence‑based treatment, and advanced clinical assessment skills

Desirable

• Experience in research and service development, including conducting research studies, publishing in peer‑reviewed journals, presenting findings at conferences, or leading audit and quality improvement projects
• Experience managing industry‑funded projects or clinical trials, including developing research proposals and collaborating with external stakeholders
