Role Description This is a contract Patent Specialist role based in Manchester, offered on a hybrid basis with a mix of on-site and work-from-home arrangements. The Patent Specialist will prepare and draft patent applications, review technical disclosures, and assess the scope and strength of potential inventions. Responsibilities include managing patent prosecution activities, tracking deadlines, coordinating with external counsel, and maintaining accurate records of filings and office actions. The role involves advising internal and client stakeholders on patentability, basic aspects of patent law, and IP strategy, as well as supporting prior art searches and helping to develop documentation that aligns with business objectives. The Patent Specialist will collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure that all work complies with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- Strong skills in patent applications and patent preparation, including drafting clear, technically accurate specifications and claims.
- Demonstrated experience with patent prosecution and patentability assessments to support effective filing and response strategies.
- Working knowledge of patent law and related IP regulations in relevant jurisdictions.
- Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to interpret complex technical information and communicate it in a structured, understandable manner.
- Experience collaborating with inventors, engineers, or product teams in a professional setting.
- Strong organizational skills, including managing multiple cases, deadlines, and documentation simultaneously.
- Relevant academic background in law, engineering, science, or a related technical field; prior patent office or law firm experience is an advantage.
