A Day in the Life

Medtronic Digital Technologies is creating ambitious new products that bring connectivity, real-time guidance, and decision support to the operating room. To support this mission, we are developing compact, high-performance, embedded systems that enable edge computing and connectivity. Working closely with other teams across Medtronic, we are creating a connected ecosystem and leveraging the state of the art in computer vision to provide the most comprehensive view of surgery. Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Own well-scoped backend and services work from design through production.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of larger features, services, and components in collaboration with other software engineers.
  • Write high-quality Python code and participate actively in code reviews.
  • Improve the testability, observability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Apply established engineering standards and contribute to improving them, with a focus on clarity, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with product, systems, QA, clinical/domain, and engineering partners to deliver reliable solutions.
  • Document technical decisions, interfaces, operational procedures, and relevant system context to support maintenance and handover.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • 4+ years of professional backend development experience, primarily using Python.
  • Demonstrated commitment to software quality through effective code reviews and writing and maintaining unit, integration, and API-level tests using pytest.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Django and Django REST Framework, including building and maintaining production services.
  • Practical experience designing and evolving REST APIs, including validation, error handling, versioning, and backward compatibility.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguity: clarifying requirements, breaking down complex problems, making progress with incomplete information, and adapting as requirements evolve.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and contribute effectively to knowledge transfer and project handovers.
  • Must be willing to commute to London 2 to 3 days per week.
  • Interest in AI-assisted or agentic coding workflows, with good judgment around code review, testing, and responsible use of generated code; product experience with agentic coding tools is a plus.

Pay range: United Kingdom: 58,000.00 GBP - 87,000.00 GBP. This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
