About the Role
This is a senior leadership opportunity for an operationally focused professional who thrives in governance‑led environments and is passionate about building effective, member‑focused organisations. Act as the Society’s senior operational lead, ensuring the smooth and effective delivery of the organisation’s operations, services, and organisational priorities. The successful candidate will work closely with Exec, Council, staff, contractors, regional groups, and external stakeholders to strengthen organisational effectiveness, improve operational delivery, and support the Society’s long‑term success. This role provides professional operational leadership while maintaining clear boundaries between governance, strategy, and operational management.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership
- Lead and manage the day‑to‑day operations of the Society
- Implement agreed operational plans, policies, and procedures
- Ensure efficient, consistent, and member‑focused service delivery
- Establish clear workflows, accountability structures, and escalation processes
- Strategic Delivery
- Translate agreed strategic priorities into operational actions and outcomes
- Advise Exec on operational feasibility, organisational capacity, and risk
- Support organisational development, change, and improvement initiatives
- Financial Management
- Oversee delivery of the approved annual budget alongside the Honorary Treasurer and finance support staff
- Ensure strong financial controls and accurate reporting processes
- Monitor cash flow, expenditure, and operational risks
- Support transparent and timely financial reporting to Exec and Council
- Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Society’s Articles, Rules, policies, and relevant regulations
- Prepare operational reports, risk updates, and briefing papers
- Support Exec in fulfilling governance and oversight responsibilities
- Maintain appropriate separation between governance decisions and operational delivery
- People Management
- Line manage Society staff and contractors
- Lead recruitment, performance management, and professional development
- Foster a professional, inclusive, and respectful organisational culture
- Ensure HR procedures are applied fairly and consistently
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the primary operational contact for members, partners, suppliers, and advisers
- Represent the society externally where appropriate
- Support clear and transparent communications across the organisation
About You
We are looking for a highly organised, resilient, and collaborative leader with strong operational management experience.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Proven senior operational or general management experience
- Experience within a membership organisation, professional body, or governance‑led environment
- Strong organisational, operational, and financial management capability
- Experience managing staff and complex stakeholder relationships
- Ability to work effectively with elected officers, volunteers, and professionals
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills
Desirable
- Experience supporting organisational development, restructuring, or recovery
- Familiarity with healthcare or professional membership organisations
- Experience working with external HR, finance, or legal advisers
Contract & Hours
Full‑time or part‑time considered. Fixed‑term appointment (12‑18 months initially), with formal review.
