The Role
As the Lead DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing our MoDCloud Azure infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation practices. You will lead a team of engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of our cloud environments, particularly in classified settings.
Primary Responsibilities
- Designing and implementing secure and compliant cloud infrastructure on MoDCloud Azure.
- Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates, or Bicep.
- Automating deployment processes and CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.
- Monitoring and optimizing cloud resources for performance, cost, and security, adhering to MoD guidelines.
- Collaborating with development teams to integrate DevOps practices into the software development lifecycle.
- Leading and mentoring a team of DevOps engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
- Implementing best practices for cloud security, compliance, and disaster recovery in classified environments.
- Troubleshooting and resolving infrastructure-related issues in a timely manner.
- Staying up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies in cloud computing and DevOps, particularly within the defence sector.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in DevOps, cloud engineering, or a related role, with a focus on Azure.
- Strong expertise in Microsoft Azure services and architecture, specifically in MoDCloud environments.
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or Bicep.
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
- Knowledge of containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and orchestration.
- Familiarity with scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation tasks.
- Understanding of cloud security best practices and compliance frameworks, particularly in classified settings.
- Experience working in the UK defence industry and familiarity with classified environments.
Desirable Experience
- Relevant Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect, Azure DevOps Engineer).
- Experience with monitoring and logging tools (Azure Monitor, Application Insights, ELK Stack).
- Knowledge of configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and practices.
