Sunderland City Council are looking to recruit a Regulatory Compliance Officer on a fixed term 12 month contract. The role is as a result of receiving funding from the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government, to support the Council in its approach to dealing with medium and high-rise flats that have building safety defects.

The successful applicant will ideally have experience in private sector housing regulation under the Housing Act 2004 (HHSRS) and fire safety, however applications will be considered from persons who have a can-do approach to work with good computer literacy and communication skills, experience in building construction or surveying or general regulation would advantageous.

The role will involve assisting an established Senior Environmental Health Officer and Team manager in dealing with high and medium rise buildings. This will involve communicating with responsible persons linked to the buildings, collecting information from responsible persons and forming part of an inspection and assessment team. Where remediation of such buildings does not take place in a timely manner, use of formal enforcement tools would be used so experience of service of legal notice would be of benefit.

Training is available together with the opportunity to shadow and learn from existing inspecting staff.

The post is fixed term for 12 months currently with a focus on medium and high-rise properties. It is an exciting time to join Sunderland City Council and improve the standards in privately rented accommodation throughout the City as it prepares for the delivery of the Renters Right Bill which is hoped to transform the experience of privately renting.

The successful applicant will need to be able to work by themselves and also as part of a team being able to assess risk and form sound and reasonable actions to protect the residents of the accommodation.
