Australia has officially opened a new fast-track pathway to specialist registration for internationally trained General Physicians and General Paediatricians — and it’s a genuine game‑changer. From 19 January 2026, eligible doctors can apply directly to the Medical Board of Australia, bypassing the traditional full college assessment process and moving straight toward consultant-level practice. This pathway is designed for doctors trained in comparable health systems and removes one of the biggest barriers to working in Australia.
Who Can Apply?
- General Paediatrics
- UK: MRCPCH + CCT (awarded from August 2007 onwards)
- Ireland: MRCPI (Paeds) + CSCST (from July 2010 onwards)
- Recent experience in general paediatrics is required
- General Medicine
- UK: MRCP(UK) + CCT in:
- General Internal Medicine (from August 2007)
- GIM with Acute Medicine (from August 2009)
- Approved dual CCT pathways (from August 2019)
- Recent practice in general medicine is required
