Overview
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB To draw blood, or other samples/specimens, from patients for various testing purposes in accordance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of routine and complex blood and specimen collecting procedures in line with professional standards and regulatory requirements to ensure safe patient care
- Conduct pre-and post-test counselling to patients and family members, to explain blood draw procedures and answer any questions about the process
- Identify, prevent and report risks to ensure patient safety and follow all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain a sterile work area
- Perform administrative tasks to ensure correct and accurate recording and processing of patient and clinical information
- Ensure that all utilised stock is accurately recorded and charged
- Build and maintain collaborative working relationships, as part of the multi-disciplinary team within the EC Unit
Required Education
- Registered/Enrolled Nurse, or Certificate in Phlebotomy Techniques
Required Experience
- At least 1 – 2 years’ experience after nursing/phlebotomy qualification
Required Job Skills and Knowledge
- Phlebotomy procedures
- Relevant statutory and regulatory requirements, clinical policies and procedures
- Patient assessment skills
- Patient counselling skills
- Risk identification
- Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols
- Health and Safety principles
- Patient experience principles and related best practice
- Basic life support trained
- Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office)
