Senior MRI Radiographer

Role Purpose: This role is accountable for performing imaging procedures predominantly in MRI with some X-ray, deferring to Lead Radiographer/Centre Manager when required. This role maintains a high level of professionalism to ensure a high quality, responsive and patient-focused service.

Responsibilities:

• Undertaking a wide variety of imaging examinations on different makes and models of equipment, acting as a Practitioner as defined within IR(ME)R 2017, requiring an assessment of each referral and a decision on whether to proceed with the examination as requested, modify or reject it.
• Determine and deliver the most appropriate imaging procedures to assist with diagnosis and subsequent treatment of a wide range of patients and conditions. May involve discussion and, where necessary, refusal of requests from doctors and emergency nurse practitioners using IR(ME)R regulations.
• Prepare patients for imaging procedures alongside other Radiographers and Radiographic Assistants; explain the procedure and ensure the patient is comfortable and properly positioned.
• Ensure all referrals are justified and provide advice on protocols if required.
• Ensure patient identification/safety checks are completed prior to imaging examination.
• Ensure consistently high-quality images are produced.
• Administer contrast media in line with PGD guidance, SOPs and protocols.
• Assess all images for quality and clinical significance and escalate urgent findings.
• Ensure all examinations are completed, post-processed and allocated for reporting at the end of each day.
• Be responsible for own clinical areas with regard to linen change and cleanliness.
• Supervise junior Radiographers and Radiographic Assistants when required, ensuring they work in line with IRR2017.
• Be flexible in working practices to ensure Imaging services are staffed at all locations.
• Adapt protocols and procedures for best practice in conjunction with local radiologist and clinician requests.
• Provide clinical input as required to promote the service to local clinicians.
• Act professionally within the standard and framework provided by the HCPC and College of Radiographers’ Code of Professional Conduct; maintain active HCPC registration.
• Maintain the highest standards of patient care and privacy, providing support and reassurance to patients.
• Maintain ongoing CPD and a professional portfolio in line with HCPC and SoR recommendations and requirements.
• Update clinical practice, participate in clinical trials as required, and keep up to date with latest techniques.
• Carry out responsibilities in relation to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, including knowledge of supporting policies and safety, and undertake appropriate training for your role.
• Be part of the Radiation Protection Supervisors team within the department; provide reports for the annual radiation meeting and report incidents and concerns with support from the RPA.

Health & Safety and Compliance:

• Understand safety issues and hazards and safety implications of working on 1.5T and 3T scanners.
• Ensure all safety guidelines are followed in clinical practice.
• Carry out regular Quality Assurance tests on equipment.
• Be responsible for the safety of patients and other staff.
• Report any equipment malfunctions to a senior person and record relevant information on the RADAR system.
• Comply with IR(ME)R 2017 and Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 to help reduce radiation dose to patients, staff and the public.
• Ensure all work environments are safe and within guidelines.
• Maintain compliance and ensure department staff awareness and compliance with all legislative and company policies (e.g., CQC, SHE, DSE, Fire, COSHH, Life Support, Safeguarding, Information Security, Infection Control and Manual Handling).
• Maintain high standards of infection control.
• Contribute to risk assessments for new and current imaging locations and modalities.
• Adhere to company policies and professional standards.
