This is a full-time position for an Underwriter based in the City of London, with flexibility to work from home on designated days. As an Underwriter within the Political Violence team, you will assess and price risks related to geopolitical events, analysing client, actuarial and market data to determine appropriate coverage and premiums. You will develop tailored policy terms, liaise with brokers and stakeholders and monitor global trends to ensure accurate risk assessment and competitive, compliant underwriting decisions.
Job Specification
- Evaluate and review insurance applications to assess completeness, accuracy and suitability for underwriting consideration.
- Analyse the nature and extent of risk, using actuarial data, claims history and external risk factors to inform decision-making.
- Make underwriting decisions, including accepting, declining or referring risks in line with company guidelines and risk appetite.
- Define and negotiate policy terms, conditions, coverage limits and premiums to ensure appropriate risk pricing and profitability.
- Conduct regular reviews of existing policies at renewal, reassessing risk exposure and adjusting terms and pricing as necessary.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal underwriting standards.
Key Technical Skills / Knowledge / Professional Qualifications Required
- Strong understanding of underwriting principles, insurance products and risk assessment methodologies.
- Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to agree commercially viable terms with brokers and clients.
- Proficiency in interpreting and applying actuarial models, statistical data and underwriting tools to assess and price risk accurately.
- Ability to make sound, independent underwriting decisions within delegated authority and organisational guidelines.
- High level of attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in risk evaluation, documentation and policy wording.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and identify key risk drivers.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to clearly articulate underwriting decisions and rationale.
- Knowledge of Political Violence underwriting, including terrorism, civil unrest and geopolitical risk exposures, with the ability to incorporate global intelligence and security insights into underwriting decisions.
