As a Senior Journalist for the Belfast Telegraph, you will lead a small, agile team of multimedia journalists in our new Derry~Londonderry hub, driving digital-first coverage of local news, politics, and community issues while ensuring high editorial standards. The Senior Journalist will manage day-to-day operations, mentor reporters, and deliver compelling content across web, social and video. We are open to applications on a full-time or part-time basis and are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
- Editorial Leadership
- Oversee daily news output from the Derry~Londonderry hub ensuring accuracy, speed, and relevance.
- Ensure we appeal to non-traditional Belfast Telegraph audiences.
- Inspire and coach multimedia reporters to produce exclusive stories, video packages, and social-first content.
- Maintain strong news judgment and uphold Mediahuis editorial standards.
- Digital Strategy & Audience Growth
- Champion digital-first workflows; prioritise web and social publishing.
- Collaborate with the Audience team to optimise headlines, SEO, and engagement metrics.
- Drive video and audio innovation, including live hits and podcasts.
- Planning & Deployment
- Manage rotas and resource allocation for the hub; ensure coverage of key diary events and breaking news.
- Liaise with Belfast and Dublin desks for integrated coverage.
- Community & Hyperlocal Focus
- Build relationships with local stakeholders and surface stories that matter to communities in the North West.
- Balance hard news with features on lifestyle, culture, and local trends.
- Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all content meets legal and ethical standards; work with Legal Manager as needed.
- Uphold the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice.
Experience & Qualifications
- Proven track record in news leadership or senior reporting role.
- Knowledge of issues affecting Derry~Londonderry and the North West.
- Ability to produce video and social media content to newsroom standards.
