The Company
A small, friendly, growing media and events company based in Croydon. They have aconsultative sales environment where you are given the freedom and support to work towards your sales target, without having to worry about arbitrary call ratesand other KPI\βs. The commission at the organisation is particularly strong as they pay 10% on all deals. Existing sales people can earn up to Β£50k in commission (although in year one it will likely be less than half that as you will be finding your feet).
The Role of Business Development Manager
This company works closely with local councils producing media (magazines, websites) and events which help the council and their private partners to stimulate further investment. Unusually you would be involved in all aspects of the project.
Therefore you would start by meeting the council, working out the scope for the project that the council would ideally like (eg how many magazines and/or e-newletters per year, how many events of what type per year, online presence etc) and then balance that with the realistic advertising/partnership revenues which you and the council agree are realistic from their30 or so private sector partners. Then, with an introduction by the council, you will start to engage with their private sector partners to discuss advertising/sponsorship into the magazine/website/events.
Every package will be bespoke to each client and since there are not more than 30 or so private partners which work with the council, this is a very considered and consultative sales position. Clients tend to be property development companies, pension funds etc who all have a vested interest in the area becoming more affluent, vibrant and therefore desirable (driving up property/land values).
The company work with many different councils (as well as a few private companies) so you will tend to work on a project for 12 or so weeks before moving onto a new media project with another council/client. You would be working on projects for existing and new council clients. This role therefore has an unusually large scope to it, real variety and high financial rewards.
