The postholder will provide high quality, clinic based ophthalmic care within the areas of Pre Operative Cataract Assessment (POC/PAC) and YAG laser clinics, supporting the consultant‑led service and contributing to efficient patient flow and excellent clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Pre Operative Cataract (POC/PAC) Clinics
- Conduct comprehensive pre operative cataract assessments, including history, refraction review, slit lamp examination, and biometry interpretation.
- Identify co existing ocular pathology and escalate appropriately.
- Counsel patients regarding cataract surgery, risks, benefits, lens options, and expected outcomes.
- Determine suitability for surgery and complete relevant documentation, including consent where appropriate.
- Optimise patient pathways to ensure timely surgical listing.
- YAG Laser Clinics (YAG Capsulotomy / YAG PI if applicable)
- Perform YAG posterior capsulotomy for posterior capsular opacification.
- Perform YAG peripheral iridotomy (if within local scope of practice).
- Assess indications, contraindications, and post procedure outcomes.
- Provide post laser advice, prescribe medications as required, and arrange follow up.
- Maintain accurate laser logs and comply with laser safety standards.
- General Ophthalmology Clinic Duties
- Manage a range of anterior segment and general ophthalmic conditions within scope of practice.
- Triage and review follow up patients, ensuring safe and efficient clinical decision making.
- Work collaboratively with consultants, optometrists, nurses, and technicians to deliver high quality outpatient care.
- Contribute to reducing waiting times and improving patient experience.
- Clinical Governance & Professional Duties
- Participate in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities.
- Maintain up to date CPD and mandatory training.
- Adhere to GMC standards and local Trust policies.
- Engage in departmental teaching and supervision of junior staff or trainees where appropriate.
Work Pattern
Clinic based only (no theatre sessions, no on call unless agreed separately). Sessions typically include:
- POC/PAC clinics
- YAG laser clinics
- General ophthalmology follow up clinics
Essential Requirements
- GMC registration with licence to practise.
- Minimum 4 years post graduation experience, including at least 2 years in ophthalmology.
- Competence in cataract assessment and YAG laser procedures.
- Ability to work independently within a consultant led service.
Desirable
- Experience in biometry interpretation and refractive planning.
- Additional skills in glaucoma or medical retina follow up clinics.
- Evidence of audit, QI, or teaching involvement.
