The Locum Consultant in General Medicine provides senior clinical leadership within the acute and general medical service. The postholder delivers high quality inpatient and outpatient care, supports Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) where applicable, and contributes to multidisciplinary team (MDT) working to ensure safe, effective, and patient centred services. This role often involves managing complex medical cases, supervising junior doctors, and contributing to service development within a high performing NHS Trust.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Duties
  • Provide consultant level care for general medical inpatients, including daily ward rounds.
  • Lead the assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Support SDEC, Acute Medical Unit (AMU), or equivalent front door services as required.
  • Deliver outpatient clinics in General Medicine or relevant subspecialty interests.
  • Participate in the general medical on call rota, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ensure timely discharge planning and safe transitions of care, working closely with MDT colleagues.
  • Provide expert input for patients with complex comorbidities across the Trust.
  • Leadership & Teamwork
    • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff (FY1–ST3+), specialty doctors, and ACPs.
    • Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, pharmacists, and other MDT members to deliver coordinated care.
    • Contribute to departmental meetings, governance activities, and service improvement initiatives.
    • Promote a culture of safety, learning, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Education & Training
    • Participate in teaching for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
    • Support appraisal and revalidation processes for junior staff.
    • Engage in CPD activities and maintain GMC requirements for Good Medical Practice.
  • Governance & Quality
    • Participate in clinical audit, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement projects.
    • Ensure compliance with Trust policies, NICE guidelines, and national standards.
    • Contribute to service redesign and innovation to improve patient flow and outcomes.

    Person Specification

    • Essential
    • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
    • Entry on the Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT).
    • Evidence of broad experience in acute and general medicine.
    • Strong communication, leadership, and team working skills.
    • Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and teaching.
  • Desirable
    • Subspecialty interest that complements Trust needs (e.g., respiratory, cardiology, geriatrics).
    • Experience in SDEC/acute medicine.
