Company background: buddi is the world's smallest assisted GPS personal tracker with emergency support. buddi is the ideal personal safety solution for the elderly, children, lone worker protection as well as those with dementia and Alzheimer's. A couple of years ago, we also entered the electronic offenders monitoring market with the launch of the buddi tracker product family, which introduces a range of novel features and has received outstanding feedback from customers and community. As a result of the current success, we are looking to increase our R&D capability to continue developing novel features and cutting edge new products within the personal tracking segments that we are targeting (Healthcare and electronic monitoring).
We are looking for an enthusiastic mechanical engineer with a passion for product design and new concepts creation. We are working on the development of two product ranges (main unit and accessories) for healthcare and electronic monitoring market segments. These two product ranges are at different stages of the full development cycle: concept inception, prototyping, tooling, production, testing, approvals, field test and market feedback.
We are currently outsourcing work packages to external design consultancy firms and they have a good supply of expertise in all the relevant phases. The new recruit will have the opportunity to take in-house parts of the development and liaise with the external agencies for those parts that should remain outsourced. This is a very good opportunity for a mid-career mechanical engineer that is confident to take on significant parts of mechanical design of new products and keen to learn from experts in the field to develop into a world-class product designer.
Experience and possible duties:
- Capture requirements and challenges for new or existing products and produce conceptual sketches of possible solutions, maintaining relevant product documentation throughout with a pragmatic approach.
- Understanding of mechanical design principles for electronic enclosures: materials, sealing, external interfaces, able to design appealing, desirable and practical products.
- Concept design and development in CAD (e.g. Solidworks).
- Experience with Rapid Prototyping techniques, liaison with suppliers and resolution of issues.
- Concept developments for volume manufacture, addressing requirements for injection moulding tooling, volume electronics product assembly and testing.
- Experience in the liaison with tool makers (e.g. in the far east), resolution of issues.
- Experience on the various product approvals requirements in various geographies: FCC, CE, UL, BS, able to advise early on in the project, also liaise with testing houses and manage process to achieve the relevant certification.
- Experience on relevant environmental tests: IP rating, vibration, shock, able to design and test products to meet the desired specification, or able to identify and liaise with external test agencies if required.
- Other sundry activities will be to develop labels for the product and source off the shelf accessories such as power supplies or accessories.
