A growing engineering business is looking for a Design Engineer to deliver bespoke projects from concept through to production and commissioning. The role involves hands-on mechanical design, working closely with customers and internal teams to deliver cost-effective, compliant solutions.

This is an established UK-based manufacturer specialising in the design and build of custom automated equipment for a range of industrial sectors. The business is experiencing steady growth and places a strong emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and developing tailored engineering solutions.

Description

Key responsibilities:

  • Work directly with customers to understand requirements and support the quoting/tender process
  • Develop conceptual designs and engineer practical, effective solutions
  • Produce detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings to recognised standards (e.g. BS8888)
  • Create accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support downstream manufacturing processes
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulations, quality standards and H&S requirements
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including production, buying, sales and service
  • Provide project updates and manage design approvals with internal and external stakeholders
  • Support projects through manufacture, build and commissioning phases
  • Occasional site visits, including potential overnight stays

Profile

The successful candidate

  • Qualified in Mechanical Engineering (Apprenticeship, HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent)
  • Around 2+ years' experience in a Design Engineer role
  • Proficient in 3D CAD (any mainstream package)
  • Experience working with design data management systems (PDM or similar)
  • Exposure to ERP/MRP systems would be beneficial
  • Practical, hands-on mindset with the ability to test and validate concepts
  • Strong problem-solving skills and able to manage multiple projects effectively
  • Confident communicator, comfortable liaising with customers and internal teams
  • High attention to detail with a strong focus on delivering quality solutions
