About the role
Mecalac Construction Equipment UK is looking for an experienced
Senior Electrical / Electrical Distribution Engineer to join our Engineering team in Coventry.
This is a key technical role supporting the development of electrical and electronic systems across new model programmes and current engineering projects .
You will take designs from concept and system architecture through detailed design, validation, release and production support.
You will act as a technical authority for vehicle electrical systems, ensuring robust, cost-effective and manufacturable solutions are delivered, while providing practical engineering support to prototype and production vehicles.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the development of cost-effective electrical designs from Concept through to Production, including full documentation and technical specifications to fulfil requirements.
- Take technical ownership of vehicle electrical and electronic architecture, including power distribution, harness systems, controllers, displays, sensors, actuators and associated electrical interfaces.
- Develop, review and maintain electrical schematics, harness drawings, system documentation and technical specifications in accordance with engineering requirements and standards.
- Define electrical system requirements and ensure appropriate component selection, cable sizing, circuit protection, connector selection, derating and design margins are applied.
- Lead and participate in technical design reviews, ensuring design risks, system interfaces, technical decisions and actions are appropriately assessed, documented and closed.
- Develop and support Design Verification Plans (DVP) and validation activities at component, subsystem and vehicle level to ensure electrical systems meet functional, performance and durability requirements.
- Lead structured investigation and resolution of electrical issues arising during development, prototype build, production or field operation using appropriate diagnostic and root-cause analysis techniques.
- Engage with suppliers on technical requirements, component selection, design development, validation, issue resolution and technical approval of electrical and electronic systems.
- Follow relevant engineering processes and procedures, including Engineering Change Requests, Engineering Releases and Design Review sign-offs.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, graduates and apprentices, and where required coordinate engineering activities to ensure project objectives, timing and technical deliverables are achieved.
- Where necessary support Manufacturing and Purchasing with technical expertise to resolve issues, concerns or assess alternate proposals. (It is expected that this could be 10-20% of time).
- Prepare and deliver progress reports against project plans
- Keep up to date with relevant technology developments in appropriate technical areas, developing skills and capabilities, and giving support and expertise to others as required
- Support a continuous improvement culture across the Engineering team, contributing to a high performing environment

About you
We are looking for an experienced electrical engineer with a hands-on approach to engineering design and development and a strong technical understanding of electrical systems used within mobile off-highway or industrial products.
- HND or Level 5 qualification in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent electrical engineering design experience.
- 4yrs + years' experience developing electrical design solutions through to production level.
- Experience creating detailed schematics and harness, drawings, component selection etc
- Knowledge of J1939 CAN protocols.
- Experience utilising acknowledged industry software to develop system solutions and schematics.
- Experience developing and using component libraries to support common solutions and aid design efficiency.
- Hands-on approach to engineering design and development
- Experience of engineering design reviews, release and change control processes.
- Excellent technical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Ability to plan, prioritise and solve problems in a structured manner.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or other relevant subject.
- Chartered Engineer status and/or membership of a professional engineering organisation.
- Experience using
ZUKEN E3 .
- Experience using CAD to construct and assess 3D packaging solutions.
- Experience using Vector canalyzer.
- Experience of achieving ISO 13849 EMC compliance.
- Experience working with mobile off-highway or industrial products.
- Automotive industry experience.
- Experience supporting new model launches.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic and mechanical systems and an appreciation of how electrical systems interact with hydraulic and mechanical systems.
