Due to maternity leave, we have an exciting opportunity for a qualified dispenser (NVQ level 2 or equivalent) to join our busy dispensary team on a part-time basis. The role is for 30 hours per week to be worked Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8am - 6.30pm. We currently dispense to around half of our patient population, both in the practice and also via our delivery service. We're looking for a high-performing and pleasant team player with good communication and interpersonal skills, initiative, attention to detail, potential to improve, and pride in themselves and their excellent work.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide quick, accurate and efficient dispensing of medications.
  • Gather medications.
  • Check dispensed medications.
  • Answer patient and clinician queries.
  • Order stock and input the delivery onto the computer system.
  • Collect NHS prescription charges.
  • Hand out dispensed medications to patients.
  • Work and liaise with our dispensing team.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary

To be responsible for the processing of prescriptions in accordance with practice policy and extant legislation. In addition, the post holder will be required to support the Dispensary Manager in ensuring a high level of service is delivered at all times whilst supporting the multi-disciplinary team in line with the strategic objectives of the practice.

Primary responsibilities

  • Check all medicines dispensed, ensuring there are no discrepancies.
  • Dispense medicines to the entitled population safely and accurately.
  • Collect prescription charges in accordance with dispensary protocol.
  • Maintain stock levels within the dispensary, liaising with the dispensary manager to facilitate reordering.
  • Receive and store supplies in accordance with current policy, ensuring the cold chain is maintained where applicable.
  • Ensure controlled drugs are dispensed in accordance with practice policy.
  • Ensure safe disposal of returned and/or out of date medicines.
  • Process all repeat prescriptions within a 72-hour timeframe.
  • Assist the Dispensary Manager in the preparation of monthly returns.
  • Always maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate records.

Secondary responsibilities

  • Partake in audit as directed by the audit lead.
  • Provide guidance for trainee dispensary staff and students as necessary.
  • Remain current with the latest guidance ensuring the dispensary conforms to NICE, CQC, etc. guidance.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Experience of working in a dispensary.
  • Experience working with the general public/patients.
  • Experience of working in primary care.
  • Broad knowledge of general practice.

Qualifications

  • GCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths at Grade C (4) or above.
