- Age 16–18: £7.96 per hour — 40 hours per week (including time at college)

You will join Mears Group in the week commencing 03/08/2026, and your apprenticeship course will begin in the week commencing 21/09/2026. The programme has an expected duration of approximately 24 months.

Bricklaying is a core function within the construction sector especially in house building and refurbishments. As a Bricklayer you will have to learn to lay bricks, blocks, and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches, and other structures e.g., chimney stacks. You might also refurbish brickwork and masonry as well as seal foundations with damp resistant materials.
The apprenticeship course will cover the following:
- Learn how to work safely on site, including understanding health and safety rules, using PPE correctly, and recognising risks such as working at height, manual handling, electrics, and hazardous substances.
- How safe systems of work operate, including site inductions, toolbox talks, risk assessments, method statements, and keeping a safe and tidy work area.
- Learn about environmental responsibilities in construction, including waste segregation, recycling, efficient use of materials, and preventing damage to the environment.
- Learn the basic principles of building construction, including walls, floors, roofs, insulation, damp protection, fire stopping, ventilation, and sustainability considerations.
- Learn about common bricklaying materials, their characteristics, and correct use, including bricks, blocks, mortar, wall ties, lintels, insulation, DPCs, and steelwork.
- Learn how to read and understand drawings and specifications, including basic digital design information, and use them to plan work and estimate materials.
- Learn how to set out and construct brick and blockwork, including solid and cavity walls, openings, bonds, joint finishes, decorative features, expansion joints, and raking cuts.
- Learn how to select, use, maintain, and store hand and power tools safely, and how to cut bricks and blocks accurately.
What do you need to be a successful applicant:
- GCSEs in English and maths at grade 1 or above
- The ability to travel to your college provider and to your branch when required
- A genuine desire to learn and develop strong technical knowledge, including the skills, technology, and safety procedures needed to carry out the full range of tasks
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to build and maintain positive customer and client relationships
Please note due to the nature of the role, successful applicants must complete a basic maths and English assessment.
