All our Apprentices are paid above the national minimum wage, and you’ll be paid for your normal working hours plus your attendance at college. You will have the opportunity to gain real-life experiences, such as working in people’s homes, getting involved in community projects, and improving people’s lives by being customer-focused.

What will I learn through the apprenticeship programme?

With 30 years of experience in delivering market-leading repairs and maintenance services, Mears is trusted to deliver more than 6,000 repairs daily to a portfolio of over 1,000,000 homes nationwide.

The Mears Careers National Apprenticeship Scheme is designed to empower and challenge you; you’ll be trusted with real work and responsibility from the outset. During your apprenticeship, you will have a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn, receiving formal training alongside working with our skilled workforce who will inspire and train you in the practical elements of the trade. The NVQ Level 2 Carpenter / Joiner apprenticeship programme takes between 12 and 18 months to complete, after which you can progress to an Advanced Level 3 apprenticeship, which takes a further 12 to 24 months.

A Joiner is a trained crafts-person skilled in woodwork. Job tasks include measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, finishing, repairing, and maintaining timber-based products and components, such as ironmongery.

During your apprenticeship, you will be involved in fitting kitchens and bathrooms and will be responsible for fitting interior woodwork, such as doors, skirting boards, and replacing floor joists and floorboards. You will learn to understand technical drawings and gain expert knowledge in different woods and their uses.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you must pass your TRADES test. Upon passing, you will earn the status of Carpenter / Joiner.

  • The ability and desire to learn and develop a thorough knowledge of the skills, technology, and safety procedures required to carry out the full range of tasks.
  • The ability to establish and maintain good customer/client relationships.
