Charterhall Stables are recruiting for an enthusiastic Live-in Groom/Stable Manager. A role in a traditional estate stable yard for a responsible, energetic, honest, proactive and hands-on person to manage the stables. We are seeking a highly experienced, confident, and professional Stable Manager to oversee the day-to-day management of the livery business, estate horses and all equestrian facilities. This is a live-in position.
A good working knowledge of horses and stable management is essential, along with an eye-for-detail, positive attitude and great communication skills.
Essential Skills/Knowledge- A genuine interest in horses and their health, hygiene and welfare needs
- Strong stable management skills
- Experienced at handling and riding fit horses/ponies
- A good eye for detail for turnout (plaiting, clipping etc)
- Work well with others and on your own
- Provide guidance and help to children with their riding
- Exercising, preparation, turn-out & care of hunters
- The ability to work outdoors in all weathers
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness and stamina
- To understand the health and safety considerations of working around horses
- Patience and be able to stay calm under pressure
- Full valid UK Drivers Licence and Enhanced DBS required
- Ability to drive a trailer and 3.5t horse lorry
- Bringing on young horses

You will be expected to demonstrate an ability to successfully undertake and manage day-to-day stable duties including responsibility for horse welfare, paddocks and stables. You will need to develop good working relationships with the family, the estate maintenance/office team, external contractors (farriers, vets etc.) and the livery customers. A keenness to 'muck-in' with the wider estate team is essential (as well as to muck-out!).
Responsibilities / Tasks- Developing and driving the livery business forward.
- Marketing and management of the livery business and maximising stable occupancy.
- Manage the day to day running of the stables, grazing and yard areas.
- Maintaining the stables, grazing and yard areas in good condition (weeding, cleanliness, painting etc) and liaising with the estate team should any maintenance be required.
- Manage the care, health and welfare of the horses/ponies.
- Monitor condition of the horses, identifying any changes in behaviour and consulting with vets or specialist care practitioners.
- Treat minor wounds, change dressings and give medications.
- Maintain records.
- Implement the highest standards of equine health and welfare including overseeing the day-to-day exercise of horses/ponies.
- Responsible for day to day health and safety in ensuring all procedures are read, understood and followed and that Risk Assessments are reviewed regularly and that all statutory legislation is followed.
- Ensure that horses/ponies and appropriate equipment are ready on time for lessons / exercise / hunting.
- Developing and supporting children with their riding (schooling, hacking).
- Arena hire & bookings management.
- You may be required to undertake other appropriate tasks to ensure the effective running of the Stables.
This role reports directly to the estate owners.
