The Role

As a Maintenance Assistant, you will play a key hands-on role in maintaining the park to consistently high standards of safety, appearance, and functionality. This is a practical, outdoor position requiring reliability, technical competence, and pride in workmanship. Working hours are primarily between 8:00am and 6:00pm, with occasional later finishes of up to 9:00pm during peak periods, particularly around the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out general maintenance and repair tasks across the park
  • Maintain grounds and landscaped areas to ensure a safe, clean, and well-presented environment
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain tools, machinery, and equipment safely
  • Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance issues as they arise
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of the wider park team
  • Interact courteously with guests, contributing to an excellent customer experience

Core Technical & Practical Skills

  • Equipment Operation: Confident and safe use of power tools and machinery, including ride-on mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and pressure washers
  • Horticultural Knowledge: Practical understanding of plant care, including pruning, weeding, pest control, and awareness of soil types, fertilisers, and seasonal maintenance requirements
  • Grounds Care: Grass cutting, hedge trimming, strimming, and basic landscaping duties
  • General Maintenance: Minor repairs to fences, gates, and irrigation systems, along with basic painting, carpentry, and plumbing tasks
  • Health & Safety: Sound knowledge of UK health and safety requirements, risk assessments, and the safe handling of chemicals (PA1/PA6 certification desirable)

Essential Skills & Attributes

  • Strong attention to detail and a consistently high standard of finish
  • Ability to carry out regular outdoor physical duties in all weather conditions, with reasonable adjustments where applicable
  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritise workloads
  • Clear, professional communication skills
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility

Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence (B+E trailer entitlement desirable)
  • Tractor driving and implement competence is desirable, though not essential.
  • Ability to work unsupervised when required
  • Willingness to work flexible hours during peak season
  • Chainsaw operation or herbicide spraying certificates are desirable but not essential
