Work Location

Work is primarily based at MDLs Aberdeen offices with travel required to other MDL sites (Peterhead) and occasional ad-hoc travel to client locations as required.

Key Tasks

1.Ensuring project documentation, procedures and associated work instructions are developed and defined in line with MDL / Client procedures

2.Cost management of the hydraulic budgets associated with the wider project workscope

3.To design new hydraulic systems and electro-hydraulic equipment for MDL rental equipment or MDL external clients in conjunction with the wider multi-disciplined engineering and projects teams.

4.To implement and project manage hydraulic upgrades to existing MDL and client owned equipment

5.Work closely with the overall Engineering Team, Hydraulic workshop personnel & offshore Teams displaying strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.

6.To liaise with hydraulic sub-contractors and suppliers in conjunction with the MDL projects, procurement and engineering teams.

7.Detail-orientated time management and meeting deadlines with a focus on project schedules.

8.Support continuous improvement initiatives and identify inefficiencies and cost optimisation opportunities.

9.Create and implement best practice directives, policies, and processes to improve operational and financial performance.

10.Deliver solutions to problems while maintaining high levels of quality and service within budgetary requirements.

11.Championing ‘One Team MDL’ approach and acting as an MDL ambassador.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

The Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer role is to have responsibility for the successful delivery of allocated hydraulic projects, or a defined hydraulicscope of work from the Head of Design & Draughting, that fall within MDL’s service offering.

The Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer will work as part of the Shared Services Engineering Team and in support of the Asset Maintenance, New Builds and/or Rental teams within MDL to successfully deliver allocated project workscopes.

The Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer should support the full hydraulic scope through its entire project life cycle from initial specification / kick off, engineering phase, manufacture, assembly, testing, through to the delivery or execution.

The Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer must draw on technical experience and ensure technical integrity through setting best practice and providing a high level of technical guidance on all Hydraulic Engineering related matters.

  1. To follow the process of continuous improvement and to demonstrate a continuous improvement approach towards all processes, products and tasks within their role, to maintain and report key performance indicators, and to act as required to ensure agreed performance standards and expectations are achieved or excelled.
  2. To show commitment to HSEQ and to set good personal examples on HSEQ issues within their area of operation and influence. Required to report all accidents and near misses to their line manager, and to always lead by example and set high standards in all aspects of their role.
  3. To actively participate in all aspects of HSEQ awareness, education, training and communication. Accountable for stopping a job if perceived that it is not safe to progress for personnel or the equipment/ product, or if not adhering to MDL standards or procedures.
  4. To challenge internal and external processes, procedures and methodologies and to actively encourage innovation to improve the MDL offering.
  5. To always maintain good working relationships with external and internal stakeholders and act as an MDL ambassador.

Desired Skills & Experience

Experience, qualifications & skills (what is required for this role)

  1. Degree in a relevant subject discipline preferred although consideration will be given to candidates with HNC / HND and/or relevant industry experience in a similar role.
  2. Technically competent in generating, reading, interpreting and following hydraulic schematics and wiring diagram is an essential requirement of the role.
  3. Competent in the use of CAD software.
  4. Prior design experience and knowledge of open and closed loop hydraulic systems is essential including in-depth knowledge of Rexroth, Parker, Wandfluh and similar hydraulic manufacturer’s products and equipment.
  5. Competent in specifying hydraulic and electro-hydraulic components, valves, hoses and pipework sizing to suit design applications such as winches, tensioners, hydraulic power units, cranes and back deck equipment.
  6. Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations is essential
  7. Cetop, NFPA, or BFPA hydraulic training would be advantageous
  8. Strong organisational and time management skills.
  9. Proficient IT skills including SharePoint, Microsoft Project.

Training & Job Specific Requirements

  1. Familiar/competent in all Microsoft packages including Outlook, Team, Project, Excel, Word & SharePoint.
  2. Experience using project management or project cost tracking software packages.
