About the Role
The primary role of the Equipment Operator Technician, within the Assets and Operations department, is to assist in the build of new equipment and the repair, maintenance and modification of existing MDL equipment. The role also includes supporting the upkeep and maintenance of MDL facilities to the required standard. This involves working with a range of mechanical and hydraulic components used in the build, refurbishment and operation of MDL equipment. In addition, the role will support the setup, operation and ongoing maintenance of the MDL cable storage carousel and associated equipment spread at Peterhead Energy Service Base (PESB). This will include involvement in cable handling operations, quayside activities and the inspection and maintenance of carousel systems, generators, cherry pickers and fabrication maintenance of storage containers. The Equipment Operator Technician must ensure a proactive and continuous approach to safety, technical standards, industry best practice and MDL procedures, as well as supporting client site safety initiatives.
Deliverables

- To ensure the quality standards of all work are met and thereby to ensure compliance with all required regulatory bodies and standards as well as detailed client requirements
- To complete the inspection, testing and commissioning of equipment, including FAT and SIT, as appropriate
- To support the operation, maintenance and readiness of the MDL carousel system and associated cable handling equipment at Peterhead Energy Service Base (PESB)
- To assist with cable handling, spooling and quayside operations as part of MDL project scopes
- To ensure carousel equipment is maintained, inspected and available in line with operational and project requirements
- To support integration of carousel operations into wider MDL project delivery scopes
- The resolution of faults, problems and concerns that are identified with the equipment and mechanical/hydraulic systems.
- To provide technical input and support for system design activities within MDL projects
- To conduct training for apprentices and trainees
- To complete all required paperwork accurately and timely, including risk assessments
- To carry out isolations in a competent manner, complying with legislative requirements
- To work with the manufacturing and offshore teams to maximise interaction across electrical, mechanical and fabrication activities and to ensure effectiveness and efficiency
- To create, maintain & enhance effective working relationships with their team and the rest of the company
- To attend all work briefings, as required, on time
- To always ensure safe lifting and handling practices
- To ensure Permits to Work are obtained as required
- Championing ‘One Team MDL’ approach and acting as an MDL ambassador.
- To follow the process of continuous improvement and to demonstrate a continuous improvement approach towards all processes, products and tasks within their role, to maintain and report key performance indicators, and to act as required to ensure agreed performance standards and expectations are achieved or excelled.
- To show commitment to HSEQ and to set good personal examples on HSEQ issues within their area of operation and influence.
- Required to report all accidents and near misses to their line manager, and to always lead by example and set high standards in all aspects of their role.
- To actively participate in all aspects of HSEQ awareness, education, training and communication.
- Accountable for stopping a job if perceived that it is not safe to progress for personnel or the equipment/ product, or if not adhering to MDL standards or procedures.
- To challenge internal and external processes, procedures and methodologies to improve the MDL offering.
- To maintain good relationships with clients and other stakeholders as well as to act as an MDL ambassador at all times.
Work Environment
This is an onshore-based role with work primarily based at MDL premises in Gateway Business Park, Aberdeen, and Peterhead Energy Service Base (PESB). The role will involve working both in workshop and yard environments, as well as quayside operations supporting cable handling and carousel activities. Tasks are frequently conducted outside and may involve exposure to inclement weather conditions (heat, cold, wet, etc.). The job holder may be exposed to high noise environments, heavy equipment, high-pressure systems and dynamic lifting operations. Travel to client offices or sites (onshore and offshore), third-party vendors and other MDL locations may also be required on an ad-hoc basis.

- Support the mechanical operation and maintenance of the MDL carousel system and associated equipment spread at PESB.
- Assist with inspection, maintenance and fault finding on carousel mechanical systems, including rollers, drive systems and structural components.
- Participate in cable handling and spooling operations, ensuring safe and efficient execution.
- Support mobilisation and demobilisation of carousel and cable handling equipment.
- Assist with quayside setup activities, including alignment, equipment preparation and system checks.
- Provide input into improving carousel maintenance strategies and operational efficiency.
- Support asset readiness activities to ensure equipment is available, tested and fit for purpose for project delivery.
- To develop competency in carousel operations and cable handling systems to support long-term MDL operations at PESB.
Qualifications
- HNC (or equivalent) in Engineering qualification (Preferred)
- Modern Apprenticeship (or equivalent) in Engineering (Essential)
- Able to demonstrate competence in reading and understanding Mechanical Assembly (Essential) and Hydraulic drawings (Preferred)
- Good level of secondary education (Essential)
- Able to read and write simplified English (Mandatory)
- Computer literate (Preferred)
- Able to identify and use technical tools and instruments (Essential)
- Able to fact find, fault identify, and problem solve (Preferred)
- UK driving licence (Preferred)
- Experience or interest in heavy equipment operation, cable handling or rotating machinery systems.
