About the Company
Our client is a growing energy and infrastructure business delivering complex projects across the public and private sectors, helping organisations reduce energy costs, improve efficiency and deliver their decarbonisation objectives.
The business is evolving from a technology-led proposition into a broader construction and specialist decarbonisation partner, with Solar PV and LED at the core of its offering alongside wider energy-efficiency solutions.
As the business continues to grow, they are looking to appoint a Business Development Manager to identify and develop new project opportunities across the public and private sectors.
The Role
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for creating and developing a strong pipeline of new project opportunities, identifying organisations with energy-efficiency and decarbonisation requirements and developing relationships through to qualified commercial opportunities.
This is a project-based B2B sales role, rather than a traditional product-sales position.
The successful candidate will be comfortable engaging with clients around their wider business, estate and energy requirements and identifying opportunities that can develop into significant construction, energy or decarbonisation projects.
The role will work closely with the Commercial Sales, Technical and Bid teams, handing qualified opportunities across for development and conversion.
Key Responsibilities
- Business Development & New Opportunities
- Identify and develop new business opportunities across the public and private sectors.
- Research target organisations, estates and markets to identify potential energy-efficiency and decarbonisation projects.
- Build relationships with senior stakeholders across estates, sustainability, procurement and finance.
- Generate new opportunities through proactive outreach, networking, events, referrals and market intelligence.
- Develop early-stage relationships ahead of formal tender or procurement activity.
- Qualify opportunities based on client requirements, project scope, funding, timescales and commercial potential.
- Maintain a structured pipeline of prospects and opportunities through the CRM.
- Work towards agreed activity, opportunity and revenue targets.
- Project-Based Sales
- Identify opportunities for
- Solar PV, LED and wider decarbonisation/energy-efficiency projects
- Understand client requirements and identify where EESG's broader project capabilities can provide a solution.
- Develop opportunities beyond individual technology or product sales into wider project propositions.
- Engage clients around business cases, capital investment, energy savings and project outcomes.
- Work with technical and commercial colleagues to develop appropriate solutions.
- Ensure qualified opportunities are handed over effectively to the Commercial Sales and Bid teams.
- Public Sector
- Develop relationships with NHS Trusts, local authorities, public bodies and other relevant organisations.
- Identify upcoming procurement opportunities, frameworks and potential direct-award routes.
- Build relationships with estates, sustainability and procurement teams before formal tender activity.
- Develop an understanding of public-sector funding and procurement cycles.
- Track relevant market developments, funding announcements and sector opportunities.
- Market Development
- Maintain a strong understanding of the energy-efficiency and decarbonisation market.
- Monitor competitor activity, market pricing and emerging technologies.
- Identify new sectors, clients, frameworks and routes to market.
- Attend relevant industry events, networking opportunities and client engagement days.
- Work with marketing to develop targeted campaigns, messaging and sales collateral.
- Feed market and customer insight back into the wider business to help shape the proposition.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience in Business Development, Sales, New Business or Commercial within a B2B environment.
- Experience selling projects, solutions or services, rather than solely individual products.
- Ideally a background in construction, M&E, infrastructure, energy, building services or another technical/project-led environment.
- Strong track record of generating and developing new business opportunities.
- Comfortable engaging with senior decision-makers and building relationships from initial contact through to qualified opportunity.
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of project value, pricing and commercial drivers.
- Strong communication, networking and relationship-building skills.
- Structured approach to pipeline management and CRM activity.
- Self-motivated and capable of developing their own activity and opportunity plan.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for client meetings and industry events.
- Experience selling solar PV, LED, BMS, energy efficiency, renewables or decarbonisation solutions.
- Experience selling construction, M&E or capital projects.
- Existing relationships within the NHS, healthcare or wider public sector.
- Knowledge of NHS estates and sustainability requirements.
- Familiarity with public-sector procurement and the Procurement Act 2023.
- Experience with frameworks or direct-award routes.
- Existing network within the Midlands or wider UK public-sector market.
- The Ideal Background
The client is particularly interested in candidates who have experience selling project-based solutions, rather than candidates whose experience is predominantly product-led.
Relevant backgrounds could include
- Construction and building services
- M&E contractors
- Energy services / ESCOs
- Decarbonisation businesses
- Solar and renewable energy
- LED and lighting projects
- BMS and energy management
- Facilities and estate improvement
- Infrastructure and capital projects
Candidates from businesses such as Wates, Morgan Sindall, BAM, Kier, Willmott Dixon, Mitie, Equans, NG Bailey, Bouygues, VINCI, Vital Energi and similar organisations could be particularly relevant.
Direct renewable energy experience is not essential. The key requirement is the ability to develop and sell larger, consultative, project-based opportunities.
Package
- Uncapped/performance-related bonus
- 25 days holiday + bank holidays
- Genuine progression opportunity within a growing energy and infrastructure business
This is an opportunity to join a business at an important stage of its growth as it moves from a technology-led proposition towards becoming a specialist construction and decarbonisation partner.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in building the project pipeline and helping shape the company's growth across the Solar, LED, energy-efficiency and wider decarbonisation markets.
If you're an experienced BDM with a track record of selling projects or technical solutions and are looking for the opportunity to build a significant pipeline within a growing decarbonisation business, we'd be keen to hear from you.
