BESS Commissioning Engineer

Overview

We are currently seeking experienced BESS Commissioning Engineers to support utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across multiple UK sites. The successful candidate will play a key role in the commissioning, testing, troubleshooting and energisation of battery storage systems, working closely with site teams and engineering support functions to ensure safe and efficient project delivery. This opportunity would suit candidates with previous experience within BESS, substations, renewable energy, HV/LV systems or wider power infrastructure environments.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out commissioning and testing activities for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Support cold and hot commissioning activities across electrical systems and associated equipment
  • Perform fault finding, troubleshooting and system verification activities
  • Assist with energisation procedures and site acceptance testing
  • Support commissioning documentation, testing records and handover activities
  • Work alongside site management and engineering teams to coordinate commissioning activities
  • Verify SCADA/communications systems and assist with system integration checks
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with site safety procedures and operational standards
  • Maintain accurate reporting and commissioning documentation throughout the project lifecycle

Requirements

  • Previous commissioning experience within BESS, renewable energy, substations, HV/LV systems or related electrical infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, commissioning procedures and power infrastructure environments
  • Experience with testing, fault finding and energisation activities
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced site environments

Desirable

  • Utility-scale BESS project experience
  • HV/LV Authorised Person experience or electrical certifications
  • Experience with SCADA, EMS, PCS/inverters or Modbus communications
  • CSCS, IOSH, NEBOSH or SMSTS certifications
  • Renewable energy or substation commissioning background

Contract Details

  • £55 per hour
  • 10-hour days Monday-Friday
  • 2pm finish on Fridays
  • Initial project in Barnet (3-4 weeks)
  • Follow-on project in Rayleigh, Essex (3-6 months)
