MCS Group is delighted to be recruiting on behalf of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for an Environmental Health Officer to join their Sustainability team on a temporary contract until the end of July 2026. Based at Mossley Mill, with responsibility across the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough, this role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to protecting and promoting public health, environmental standards and community wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enforce statutory provisions within the remit of the Environmental Health Section.
  • Undertake inspections, audits and risk assessments across a range of Environmental Health functions.
  • Investigate complaints and major incidents including pollution incidents, food poisoning outbreaks and infectious diseases.
  • Prepare statutory notices, prosecution cases and provide expert witness evidence where required.
  • Deliver education, training and promotional activities to businesses and the wider community.
  • Liaise with government departments, organisations and partner agencies to support Council objectives.
  • Provide professional guidance, contribute to policy development and support continuous service improvement.

Essential Criteria

  • Level 6 qualification (eg Degree level or higher) in Environmental Health, which entitles you to membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
  • A minimum of 6 months' relevant experience in Environmental Health.
  • Ability to achieve targets.
  • Competent in the use of IT systems including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Analytical and Judgemental skills required to interpret complex information and solve difficult problems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current Environmental Health legislation.
  • Full current driving licence or if disability prevents driving, access to a suitable form of transport to enable the duties of the post to be carried out in full.
  • To be available from time to time to carry out duties outside of normal working pattern.
