MCS Group is working with a major technology-led organisation as it builds a new engineering capability in Belfast. This is a significant period of growth, with multiple opportunities available for experienced Java Developers across mid-level, senior and technical leadership grades. You will join a collaborative engineering environment, delivering modern software solutions for large, complex projects. The work offers plenty of technical variety, combining hands-on development with opportunities to influence design, improve engineering practices and support other developers.
The role:
- Design and build scalable backend applications and services using modern Java.
- Develop secure REST APIs and integrations for complex, business-critical platforms.
- Help modernise existing systems and move applications towards cloud-native architectures.
- Contribute to technical design, architecture discussions and engineering standards.
- Build automated tests and support applications from development through to production.
- Diagnose performance issues and resolve complex live-service incidents.
- Work alongside engineers, architects, testers and non-technical stakeholders.
- At the more senior level, provide technical direction, mentor developers and take ownership of delivery.
What you need:
- Strong commercial Java development experience.
- Experience with Spring or Spring Boot.
- A good understanding of object-oriented development, SOLID principles and common design patterns.
- Experience designing and developing REST APIs.
- Knowledge of automated testing and secure coding practices.
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions or similar.
- Experience with AWS, Azure or GCP.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions clearly.
- Experience with Kafka, SQS, serverless technologies, Hibernate, observability tooling or AI-assisted development would be advantageous but is not essential.
Why it's worth a look:
- Join a major Belfast hiring programme with genuine long-term progression.
- Work across varied, high-impact engineering projects rather than maintaining one product indefinitely.
- Access structured training, professional qualifications and cloud certifications.
- Develop experience across modern Java, cloud, containers and distributed systems.
- Move into technical leadership without having to step away from hands-on engineering.
- Hybrid and flexible working arrangements.

✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills
For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. ✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks
Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned.
