This is an excellent opportunity for someone with relevant laboratory experience who is looking to develop their career within a busy and varied laboratory environment.
The Role: As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will:
- Support the laboratory team with the technical and practical aspects of delivering a comprehensive laboratory service.
- Carry out sample reception and pre-analytical duties, including booking in, processing, labelling, cataloguing, storage and retrieval of samples.
- Sort and distribute specimens and laboratory reports efficiently.
- Assist with data processing within the laboratory.
- Following appropriate training, prepare specimens for analysis and load samples onto analysers and laboratory instruments.
- Support the preparation of solutions and reagents where required.
- Assist with the day-to-day maintenance, cleaning and calibration of laboratory equipment following appropriate training.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels of laboratory consumables and assist with supply orders.
- Ensure laboratory waste is handled and disposed of in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe and efficient working environment, adhering to Health & Safety and Infection Prevention and Control requirements.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory colleagues and users of the service.
- Support the training and mentoring of new or rotating staff where required.
- Work collaboratively with the wider laboratory team to manage daily workloads and deliver an effective service.
- Participate in a 24-hour laboratory service, including extended hours, overnight, weekends and Bank/Public Holidays as required.
The Person: The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Essential: 2 GCSEs at Grades A-C in Maths and English or equivalent, plus 2 years' relevant laboratory experience; OR 4 GCSEs at Grades A-C including Maths and English or equivalent, plus 1 year's relevant laboratory experience; OR Science A Level at Grades A-E or equivalent qualification in a science-related subject.
- Ability to work flexibly to support a 24-hour laboratory service, including extended working hours, overnight, weekends and Bank/Public Holidays as required.
- Desirable: GCSEs in Science subjects. Basic computer experience and typing skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to work on your own initiative. A flexible approach to work.
