MCS Group has a temporary position available for a Band 7 Operations Service Manager (Server Support) in Belfast. This Operations Service Manager will join a key regional public body, working as part of the Digital Operations Directorate within their Infrastructure and Information Technology Services team. You will take lead responsibility for the day-to-day operational delivery of services provided in the server support infrastructure area, ensuring all services are planned and delivered in accordance with agreed support processes, SLAs, and quality standards (ITIL, ISO 9001, ISO 20000 & 27001). This specialist lead will also head up small and medium-sized IT projects, manage staff, and provide expert technical advice across the wider network. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a prominent public sector organisation, offering high-level technical management exposure and the chance to drive continuous service improvement across enterprise-scale infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- The post holder will lead the daily operational delivery of infrastructure and server support services.
- Ensuring operational delivery services and developments align with strict support processes, SLAs, and quality standards (ITIL, ISO).
- Providing expert technical advice and guidance as a specialist in the core technologies relevant to the business area.
- Assisting the Operations Manager with delegated budget planning, resource deployment, and the creation of comprehensive project plans.
- Managing supplier performance and participating in change release management activities, including inputting into the Change Advisory Board (CAB).
- Acting as the primary point of contact for business continuity and disaster recovery events, ensuring proactive processes are documented and regularly tested.
Essential Criteria
Candidates must meet the following qualification and experience requirements:
- A university degree or professional qualification PLUS at least 3 years of experience in an ICT technical support management role within a major complex organisation; OR Additionally, applicants must clearly demonstrate relevant specialist knowledge and experience in a minimum of four of the following technical areas (providing specific details on versions used, projects, and exact roles):
- Extensive experience as a Unix Administrator, alongside provision and support of High Availability Unix and Windows systems.
- Strong technical expertise in Unix server virtualisation techniques (e.g., VMware, IBM pSeries Hyper-V) and supporting resilient, high-availability infrastructure.
- Specialist operational support knowledge of Unix operating systems (including installation, configuration, performance tuning, patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting) with proven experience in IBM AIX/IBM Power Systems, HP-UX, or RHEL.
- Managing and supporting Windows systems (e.g., Windows 2012/16/19).
- SAN-based storage provision and management.
- Database management and support (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, Caché).
- TCP/IP management and problem diagnosis.
- Active Directory design and implementation.
- Backup and restoration techniques and tools.
- Demonstrable experience of ITIL Service Management processes for complex ICT technologies.
Desirable Criteria
- A currently valid ITIL qualification.
